I would agree with you Jazz if we had the source code and could really change the game. However, Freelancer is always going to be Freelancer, despite how much we add and change it.
I feel warm and fuzzy now. It feels really really good to know someone agrees.

Some say that he is allergic to a fungus found only between the toes of Corsairs,
and that he is oblivious to 98% of Liberty Law. All we know is... He's called the Busdriver!
hm... speaking of flame proof suits - flaming a furry must really hurt.
anyway - yes, the bird might be too much for freelancer - as much as the fish is too much. - but does someone remember the concepts of that FL designer that made most of the ships? - ( might dig it out )
there was a study of the BHG shipline ( like a dozen ships ) - and the last ones looked.... well.... we would say "not FLish".
Jinx earlier you mentioned that we're playing almost a century past the events of Freelancer, I do believe you're mistaken as the current date in Discovery is in and around 816-817 AS. Whilst the events of Freelancer took place between 800-801 AS.
ahh - well.... a decade or a century - whats the difference anyway:P. - even if we played 1000 years in the future of vanilla 1.0.... we wouldn t really allow non FLish designs like
I'll just say I think with a wee bit of refinement the Adv Eagle could work. And no, it doesn't look too much like a Klingon BoP (everything takes a nod from another design no matter how original the work anyway, so why worry about similarity. Just look at the Hawk!) Now on to my thoughts:
For one thing you could shorten the neck a little, leave out the beak and give it the Hawk/Falcon/Eagle cockpit design. Modify the tail, maybe three feathers, one going up and sweeping back and the side two going down and to the side at an angle; like an f-16 with a tilt. As for keepers and additions, I'd have a couple of flaps on the side, not too pronounced but actual eagles do have a bit of a frill going on at the bottom of their head/neck. The claws could easily be reasoned as hard-points. Maybe take the actual talons off but keep a 'leg' portion to attach a gun to. Quite intimidating in my imagination.
I said all that because I'd like to see a completed design and have the chance to see it in an upcoming patch. ^_^
As for the actual question, I think we should broaden the design specs a little as groups who previously had little to no R&D and production capacity are now full power factions with their own philosophies, goals, duties, and ship needs. Maybe having some of our talented modelers design a few new lines of ships for those factions would be good, and maybe a new civi fighter or transport line to represent another major civilian manufacturer as competition for the Starflier/Hawk/Transport & Train lines. Such variety would be a nice addition, though it would take a few version updates to fully implement such a large idea. Hope I've added meaningfully to the thread ^_^
I'd say, base yourself on the concept sheets, Jinx. They truly look more futurist than actual vanilla ships. I actually based the Atlantis carrier on the original Liberty Dreadnaught concept - those who seen these drawings can easily recognise some of the features.

I wasn't refering to a star trek ship the Boeing Bird of Prey is an actual aircraft the wings just reminded me of it. Not exactly the same of course and it is rather a strange looking plane I admit.
