Welcome to the Spectator Etiquette! I am Cameron "Cammy" Cameraship, a local voyeur! I heard you want to watch other people fighting! Nothing wrong with that, but let me as experienced Camera Ship give you some tips! There is a lot you can do wrong as spectator, and that will piss someone off!
First and foremost: If you want to spectate, for example, an event battle, you want to make sure the combatants know you are a spectator at all times! For that, Discovery Freelancer has a specific ship, the Camera Ship. just like me, Cammy! Ho ho!
You can get a camera ship in less than one minute for free!
What do you need to do for that? It is simple!
1. Make a new character and give it a name that makes clear that you are a Camera Ship!
For example: Camera.Ship, Sirius.Camera, [YourName]-Camera
You want to make sure everyone knows you are not part of the battle. That is important!
2. Select one of the restarts to minimize your travel time to the battlefield!
Type /restart [template] and you get a new character based on a previous template. For example, /restart FLOmicron will restart you in Omicron Theta, just one jump away from Omicron Xi (at least in the version this Cammy wrote this guide for you). Check the list below for all Freelancer ID templates or this collection of all restart templates!
Once you press enter and confirm the restart, you will get kicked for a moment and your new ship will be loaded. Log that new ship now!
3. Go to Connecticut!
Do that by typing /conn while your cargo hold is empty (it should be by default). Launch, and you will find your ship has been teleportet to Connecticut, an out-of-roleplay system where you can transfer weapons with other players or just watch Wesker eating one Wardog mine after another!
4. Buy the Camera Ship!
It is available right where you are now, at New Haven's ship vendor. It is super cheap, you don't even need to transfer any money to your new ship character. Do make sure you have a Recruit ID, which you can get from the Equipment Vendor. The Camera Ship is an out-of-roleplay ship, meaning it is not part of the roleplay environment, and it is not allowed to interfere or roleplay in anyway. Thus, the Recruit ID matches as it is an out-of-roleplay ID, neutral to everyone.
5. Make sure your IFF is Freelancer or nothing!
You want to avoid showing up as a red blip on any combatant's sensors, simply to avoid annoying anyone. If you did one of the Freelancer ID restarts, you are fine! Otherwise, use the command /freelancer to get your IFF fixed.
6. Return to normal space!
Once your Camera Ship is set up, make sure you are docked at New Haven and type /return! Then launch. This will take you back to the base you were when you typed the command to enter Connecticut. Now you can simply undock and go to the battlefield!
Attention!
But wait, there is more! Just because you now have a Camera Ship doesn't mean you can just do whatever! Here are some tips on what to do and what not to do when you are spectating a battle!
Stay in the distance! Do not get closer to any battle than 2.000 meters!
Especially when watching snub fights, you want to get close to get a good view, but you are most likely annoying the combatants and can even accidentally interfere with the battle, for example by drawing mines to yourself. This is highly frowned upon and as a Camera Ship, you are not allowed to interfere in any way with the battle and the roleplay environment!
Don't talk in the local chat!
There are few things more annoying than people talking during a fight, where both sides need to focus on combat. Thus, people talking during a battle can mess with group coordination and vision as the text will stay for about ten seconds in the center of the screen. Keep also in mind that you are an out-of-roleplay element in a roleplay environment - you are not allowed to talk on as a Camera Ship! Also, keep in mind that people may record the ongoing battle, and the chat can't be hidden, thus it can ruin nice recordings of the fight. If you desperately need to tell someone something, write it as private message. Be considerate!
If the combatants tell you to leave, do it.
There is already enough bad blood between people among this community. No need to make it worse by annoying them with something they can't make leave. Sometimes it already helps to get a few kilometers of distance.
Don't get in the line of fire!
Capital ship fights are incredibly cinematic with all those colorful weapon projectiles and impact explosions, so it is tempting to get in the line of fire for a few cool takes - but don't do that unless you have the permission by all combatants. It can mess with selecting targets and blind fire, and in the worst case your shield/engine hitbox can intercept a shot. Don't worry, there are enough positions from where you can epic screenshots and recordings from. Recording a battle from a bird's eye perspective has some merits, too!
That's it, herms! Enjoy a community-friendly time as Camera Ship!
