So the easy way i found to get this game running on Linux has been to install it using Lutris.
Step 1- Open up your Lutris and in the top left hit the plus to add a game and hit the top option for search for installer and type in Freelancer
Step 2- After searching for installer you will want to pick freelancer-cdrom-discovery5 it should be the list option in the last of ones that come up for you make sure you have the freelancer ISO provided on https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=126999 and max sure your ISO is mounted before install seemed to not get any errors that way (https://lutris.net/games/install/38135/view) Install script for lutris can use this aswell if above doesnt work for you
Step 3- After the first step of the installation it will ask you to select your ISO so make sure it was mounted before you start this process as it might give you issues post install let the install finish (Make sure you keep track of where it installed the game files as you will need this for later) Make sure it is the ISO from provided link as any others may not work or cause issues
Step 4- Open up steam and and find your DSLauncher.exe (You can use Ctrl+F to search for it aswell little easier to do imo)
Step 5- may not be needed and just be able to run it with Steam Proton Experimental but i personally use GE-Proton9-2 which you can get with a program called ProtonUp-Qt (Important step i left out you may need to install directplay with Protontricks to your GE-Proton9-2 Wineprefix or the server will not pop up for you in game)
if when you first launch it from there and it crashes on start up or crash at server screen make dont sweat it as it just means you need to open up lutris and select your game and at the bottom where it has the play button just to the right of that is the wine icon click that and open winetricks it should be on select the default wine prefix then hit continue then click install windows DLL or component then hit ok on that scroll down until you find Directplay select it and then hit ok let that finish installing and your all set to go
If you have issues with text no scaling properly you may have to edit your text.ini files https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Freelancer there is the site for info on how to do that
and as for Vsync i did it with a steam command -vsync false which also seemed to fix the issue of not being able to select characters at the screen for deleting them
And if you need to tab out of the game use Alt-Enter to put the game in windowed mode otherwise the game will crash but other then that congrats you should be enjoying the game now any further questions hit me up on discord and ill do my best to help
