Hi Denier. Have you checked out 88 Flak? Pure Freelancer (except for 1 ship). Even space stations are flyable and it's possible to hire npc wingmen. A bit buggy compared to Discovery but worth a look. Please let us know if/when Polaris comes back up.

Flak 88 is great. However, it's for LAN multiplayer and author of the mod doesn't conceal it. Got 3 wingmen? Prepare for 2x lag in PvP combat. Anyone needs it here? I guess it's better to rely on your own ship and skills.
As for flying weapon platforms and stations... eh... maybe flying trade lanes also? :P I can do this you know, that's just not exactly what Discovery is about.

Order Captain's ID, 1 heavy fighter wingman, 50million
Order Admiral's ID, 2 heavy fighters wingmen, 70million
of course name and fighter respective to faction,
the only MAJOUR problem i se here is the imense amount of scripting and toil old iggy would have to do, so... :unsure:
