Of course this is idealistic, its a fantasy discussion. Now if stop trying to gore the matador maybe we can actually have that discussion. The balance wouldn't be created through the item alone, it would also be dependent on the user, which is why admin intervention would be key to it.
And again I say, as it stands there are a minimum of three server factions all with fanatically powerful weapons that destroy your perceived balance. Its the same principle of the Terrorist ID, you only get it if you can justify having it. But you seem to be more worried about the change of focus by Discovery's demographic rather than the impact of the item, something I can sympathise with. I just don't think its cause enough to dismiss an intellectual debate.
i think i cloak is good idea it just need to be limited say like can't be cloaked when you using weapons or when using the after burner or when using trade lanes or jump hole or jump gates and give it a good power usage so people can't have them on all the time even if they arent doing the things listed above
another idea would be when your cloak is on your shields aren't
i don't see proablem really with the cloak rules they in star trek as pretty much put above
should cost a lot of money for such things like this and be hard to find
like nomad thing as that where it came from in the sp mode of the game
and as it was in the SP mode of the game there should be no reason to keep it out of discovery mod
and mybe the french being new to 4.85 can have a weaker less usefull cloak
just have a couple of different ones out there
Adding (more?) equipment which is only available to people with admin-intervention will just add to the general ill-will already present throughout the Disco community. And as Eppy so loudly pointed out, it is elitism. Some people aren't good at writing stories (which, as I have pointed out before, is not the same as role-playing, and I think are given too much weight in the community), or coming up with 'unique' ideas for why they should have something. The more that gets added which requires admin-intervention and some huge multi-page continuing storyline to get, the more of a rift develops within the community. And this isn't a rift between 'Good RPers' and 'Bad RPers', it's a rift between 'Writers' and 'Not Writers'.
I don't see why you should have to write to garner yourself these items, if you can RP in-game that should be enough to prove yourself to the community. I've never been one for writing stories, nor for posting them yet I seem to have found my way into Das Wilde.
I think the community if becoming too elitist, and in completely the wrong way. Some items are simply too powerful to be made widely available, but because you can't write a story shouldn't prevent you from being able to acquire it.

This I certainly agree with, though I'm still not fond of the idea of anyone getting full-fledged cloaking devices.
Then on a personal level, what would you agree with? This conversation is as much about the philosophy and enjoyment of the community as it as much about the person.
I'm glad we're finally getting to talk about this, the number of times I've seen threads like this shut down with an absolute no is ghastly and repressive
What if the sensor jammer would actually be in the torpedo slot. It would have like a 1000 drain, so it couldn't be used long, and anyone who would want it to sneak up on battleships for a mass attack wouldn't be able to do so as they would have lost all their energy for shooting. Thus making it ideal for interceptor ships, or make it like the supernova, where only scout like ships could use it... it's a good idea I think but there are lot's of factors to take into account. idk

Well, I don't think a real 'cloaking device' is a good idea at all. But, I think a sensor jammer would serve much the same purpose. Most people rely almost entirely on their sensors to detect enemies, except possibly for very large ships which can be seen half a system away. If you didn't detect someone on your sensors until they were right next to you, it would be almost as good as a real cloaking device.
However, there is the balance issue. As someone pointed out, a complete sensor null would be overpowered to give to just anyone, even if it replaced your armor upgrade. One option would be to make it admin-given... But I really don't like that idea. Or you could make them limited, so they only halve the range at which sensors detect them, not defeat them completely. If this could be done (not sure if it could be or not), I think it would be balanced... People still have a few thousand k to see them coming and prepare, and it would replace the armor slot, so I don't think it would be abused by combat ships. Another option which has been suggested (again, not sure if it's even possible) would for it to drain power while active... Even if this worked, it'd have the problem of draining fighters/bombers/freighters too quickly, while transports and capships could keep it up indefinitely... Either that, or it'd just be too power-expensive for fighters/bombers/freighters to use at all.
