We've got commands, through FLhook, we've got over 150 players on in peak hours, over 200 at times. We've got a huge universe to explore, we've got a wide assortment of factions and ships, and more coming soon. Other servers have dynamic economies and customized H.U.D.'s We're litterally pushing FL to the limit on what we can do with out editing the source code.
So what's next?
New graphics engine?
New physics engine?
Revolving planets and tradelanes?
Hyperdrive? (Already been done, but still very buggy)
Advanced Cloaking systems? (removing from radar as well, and not being able to fire the weapon)
Freelancer, once we get the source code, if ever released, will become a game giant, and if it is released...we could release the next version of the greatest game, ever made.

P.S. Just felt like speaking what I was thinking, felt like posting it.
i think it rates up there with the best MMO's out. sure the graphics aren't up to part with games such as EVE, but stunning graphics aren't what make an MMO great.
Despite the ever present problems we have (in game and on the forums) the best thing about discovery is the community. it has recently gotten to become a rather large community while also keeping that relatively small feel to it that i enjoy very much.
with the game being free to play it allows for casual play where as with MMO's i feel obligated to play them since i'm forking out $15 a month for it.
what makes Discovery unique is the roleplay. every MMO i have ever played was focused on getting to the max level and getting the very best equipment. never did i see anyone actually roleplaying their character. sure Discovery has it's "chat rooms" but they are nothing to the MMO's where a MMORPG has very little if any resemblance of RP in it. if RP is attempted on a MMO, the attemptee is scoffed at and made to look the fool.
Yea we got bunch of ships, some of are really pretty rp ships and if used that way they give life in game.(gas miner, royal liner, pirate train, big dragon, and alike) Also we got awesome PVP ships for fellas who like to see death message on screen.(viper, RT, RC, avenger, wraith and so on)
More even, we got bunch of "space" eg, you can go around for days just discovering new stuff, and getting supprised by it sometimes.(like me when i found unknown object in newcastle week ago)
But of it all, i think that what separates this game from generic mmo is firstl roleplay, and second is comunity. I mean, if you look at it, we get random lolwhuter in lolercruser, but after month or so they give up, or turn good players. But mostly, you can enjoy nice, alive universe where things do change.
Only negative note i do have is too high elitism and too low tolerance of many veterans. Because of that we loose many potential players, or get in stupid situations because new peson is not instructed on how to behave. For instance, I pass trough NY very often since its part of my trade route, and i see that any new person that spawns in starflea is sent to mine silver and after that it is shown way to "Teh most uber ship". That is wrong. For my part i try to hire them out as escorts, and "show them the ropes on way". I mean, it is boring to repeat self, but try to be more polite and at service. Dont forget, diamond in raw form looks like piece of scrap glass without shine, only after it is worked on, it becomes prized gem.
While I only played on one other RP server besides this one (that one, being Phoenix RPG Mod, wherever it went), I can safely say Freelancer is a great MMO. Thanks to Discovery you've kept me around for coming up on 2 years now, and with new versions being released periodically it's been keeping my interest sparked. The best thing around here, is the community. When something goes astray, we all seem to work to solve the issue and when a new player comes around we're all happy to welcome the person to the community (and shamelessly advertise sometimes, but it has to happen).
Freelancer may not be one of the most graphically stunning games out there, but the RP involved and the amount of players we have on here makes it a great game with a great mod. As long as Igiss keeps making newer versions of Discovery, you can nearly always expect at least a little part of my day spent on the server or the forums.
It only takes ONE thing to make Freelancer IMMORTAL...
OPEN SOURCE
There is a little game called "BZFlag" which was a college project for a grade by a guy named "Badger" done more than ten years ago. He released it for open source and it is one of the most popular open source games of all time. It started with tanks driving around with "blocks" randomly scattered. Now it has textured maps, 3Danimation, effects--quite amazing from where it began. And if you like shoot through/drive through features in that game, you can thank me (uncredited). I found the exploit that let you "drive and shoot" through solid objects and made maps with it and the devs gave in after being furious at me and years of resistance and finally built it as a mapping feature. Now its common place. Great guys supporting that game. Change can happen. Another game, "Warzone 2100" which was also an X-box title was relinquished to the Open Source community and it can happen.
Open Sourcers would FLOCK to Freelancer. It would be the "Mother Of All Open Source Game Projects"
Looking at Warzone 2100 it reminds me perilously of Total Annihilation. Oh the love for that game, but you're right about open source projects. The people who would see Freelancer as a potential test and development bed for a thousand different projects is innumerable.
There are newer games that will start replacing Freelancer though. It's already happening, with things like Eve and X3 Reunion etc. If the source code isn't released FL will get pushed further from the limelight. I can see this new Jumpgate:Evolution being the ultimate replacement for FL, and it's actually an MMO. Let's hope that code gets released and plans can be made, it'd certainly bring a few new faces.
