Once you finally get the weapons in the hold all you do (I think) is sit near a station and advertise like a Sirius version of Google. Wait for the money to roll in, and on the first sign of trouble, hit the F3 button. Easy and legal way to avoid death and losing massive amounts of money.
While Arms dealing yields high profit (I think), if you lose you concentration, you lose it all instantly. I kind of flip side to Arms Dealing with the looting system.
But a smart player almost never lets that happen, since I would imagine they are smart enough to watch the scanner tab.
As others have said, Arms Dealing is very time consuming a lot of the time, and often while you can make a lot of money at it, it often merely gives the illusion of being a fast way of making cash.
Oh and I loot in an armoured transport, nothing else. That way you don't have to go back to NY with 4 codies, you can keep going to get the whole lot in one go before returning to your dealer.
