What's the difference?

'Democracy' is a form of government in which the supreme power is held completely by the people under a free electoral system.
A republic is a state or country that is not led by a hereditary monarch,[1][2] but in which the people (or at least a part of its people)[3] have impact on its government.
^ From wikipedia. What it basically means is that in a republic the parliament elects the country's leaders, with only representatives (senators) being voted into power by the people. In a democracy, the leaders are elected in a public vote. It's quite a substantial difference. Modern USA is a republic rather than a democracy for example, contrary to what most people may think.
Bretonia has the dual powers of the House of Parliament and the Monarchy. Currently, the Monarchy holds a lot of power, and there's some funky stuff going on with oppressing those who want to reduce the power of the Monarchy.
The other ones seem all right, although I dunno exactly how democratic Rheinland is. Fuer der GOttkanzler!!

It seems Rheinland, at the moment, is an unelected dictatorship, I suspect to avoid the bizarre quandary of literally electing God. I'm actually not too sure about the Rheinland criminal factions. They seem to have elements of both German communists and 20's era Nazis, particularly when you consider some of them are part of the "xenophobes in space".
I wanna be elected God! :laugh:Yeah, that's sort of funky. Actually, I'd say that the whole religion movement is centered less on the Chancellery, and more on the figure of Reinhardt himself.
As to the whole Rheinland being fascist thing... yeah, we're pretty fascist. But it's not our fault Liberty made us pay those huge reparations! We wouldn't have supported all those fascists otherwise, you know... ;);)

That, and the Founding Fathers weren't fans of democracy by any means:
John Quincy Adams, from a letter to John Taylor Wrote:Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.
James Madison, Federalist Paper #10 Wrote:A pure democracy can admit no cure for the mischiefs of faction. A common passion or interest will be felt by a majority, and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party. Hence it is, that democracies have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.
In essence, though there are other definitions, republics possess a constitution that requires more than a simple majority to alter or amend. The United States was specifically set up so that a single area of government could not gain absolute power (for example, the judiciary has the power to strike down laws deemed as unconstitutional), whereas in a democracy, a simple majority would be all that would be required for a government action to be legal.
Blodo is quite right on that regard. Remember, Americans, when we vote, we don't vote directly for an official. That's why there is something called the Electoral College. Those "electors" promise to vote for the candidate that the majority of the civilians in their states want.
As for the Corsairs Elders and Outcast Dons, I see something like this:
Corsair Elders
Outcast Dons
No stereotyping intended. Really, none intended.

Sometimes, if the popular vote between two candidates are REALLY close, but say, the Democrat side wins by a small, teeny, tiny, miniscule (pant, pant), bit and the elector for that region likes the Republican candidate better, he could end up voting Republican instead. This has happened, but on very, VERY rare occasions from what my history teachers have told me.

What are outcasts? spanish? or italian?
and what are corsairs?
spanish? or greek?
I always thought both were actually spanish with minority italian in the case of outcast, and minority greek in the case of corsairs... it seems the majority of the npcs name are spanish rooted (if not all of them in fact, I cant recall)
Spanish. the factions say "hola" and "amigo" and stuff, and the names are clearly spanish. Just cause the planets are named after stuff from the med. doesn't mean they're greek or whatever.
Greek/Italian base names, or go by names and the people who say, "Hispania? HOLA CHICOS!"
Gracias, grazie.
If I knew more Italian words, I could simulate the immense similarities, but if you listen to them, you could swear they're speaking Spanish sometimes.
-Edit- And "Don" sounds rather Italian in my opinion... Oh well, like I said, depends on how you look at it.
