This is a tough one to fathom because it is so two-sided.
I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.
Most times I am on Eddie's.ol'.Rumbucket, I have a great time RP'ing with everyone around the system, including seekers... hahaha... that one was funny as hell.
Anyway. *cough*
It came to my attention that even though a loud drunk, retired admiral might be fun to me and some others. certain players would find this irritating over system chat.
It is certainly not my goal have fun at the expense of others.
Today I was told by a player that I was 'over RP'ing'and irritating everyone in the system.
Deeyam! No faster way to kill an animated character than a statement like that!
I have submitted the ss of the PM's to an Admin but I would be very interested in the community's thoughts concerning the subject.
Please note that this is not at all about the fellow who made the statement, it is merely about fun, original roleplay and whether or not it has a place on the server.
Do we stick to hard faction/indie based RP to justify the fun PvP elements, or is there a bit more to the game than that?
Is System chat for RP or should that be kept to PM and group?
It's kinda embarresing to find out in the middle of your undies dance on the table that everyone actually thinks you're an idiot.. haha.. rather find out first! :$
I am playful by nature and tend to try and involve (voluntarily) everyone around me when I have fun, this might be out of line... I'm not sure.
I see nothing wrong with that kind of RP in system chat... some of the best times I had in liberty were on my 14th century pirate accent rogue character, runnin around with peg_leg_johnny and others demanding that people drop their booze or we'd keelhaul 'em.
Ooh! I actually saw that earlier (I think). I don't think there's a problem with rping as you were, unless there's a lot of people doing so. And then it's just hard to follow.
In any case, I enjoyed what I saw. I like strange sorts of incidents like that.
You do good Angelfire, nice to have you back by the way, you'll not please all the folks all the time. But system is for RP and only for RP anything else you feel the need to discuss goes in PM or group. Secondly you can never "over-RP". The fact you've been accused of it just suggests you really get into that character and enjoy playing him as a drunken old pirate captain. Only he's in command of more than just a galleon now. *squeaks*
There's plenty of room to step outside what the NPC's do. And so their should be. Else this community and mod will die.

Saint Del is considered a holy healer of diseases of children, but also as a protector of cattle.
The times i began telling stories about eddie's past and why he was such a depressive drunken maniac to my preys, i got messages over broadcast saying "stop that you're annoying me, idiot" or "lolwut n00b".
Ignore them.
BTW: There are a lot of eddies and drunken pirates lately! I miss the original! *cries*
Allow me to slightly disagree here, Del and Angelfire.
There is such an issue called 'throughput'. While the term is more commonly applied in computer communication systems, it can be applied seamlessly to people communication systems as well. In computer communication systems, throughput is the 'amount of data processed within a given time'. The problem associated with this issue is one of overflooding the communications medium in such a way it becomes unusable to other nodes (people) attempting to establish communications through it.
Certain issues of the system wide communications as it is implemented by the game, namely:
REACH/IMPOSITION - Characters not having an option to toggle on/off system wide messages as it would be expected of someone that can turn on/off his ship's radio, or go planetside and leave his ship, or simply switch frequencies. The only way not to receive system wide comms is to move from the system.
BUFFER LIMIT - The game keeps a very limited amount of chat log that is, up until now, inexorably replaced by newer messages. The problem is made worse as player departures and arrivals alerts count themselves as messages.
...add to the problem of "clogging" communications in game. Precisely because this is an RP server and because there are a number of characters and stories in the process of expressing themselves in game, one (the player) can be consciuous of these matters and dose his usage of the medium to allow room for others to use it as well. This doesn't only mean dosing the rate in which you will produce messages concerning your own character's story, but also the amount of time you will "force" your own story into the foreground through that.
This is made worse when your own story stands out from the overall ambiance, requiring that other characters (people) pay attention to its details so they can participate in or that they ignore it completely. Problem with the latter option is that whatever you say from then on will rapidly turn your "RPing" into utter garbage and a waste of space to these people. Certain characters do have greater chances of becoming just annoying (mostly those with intricate and out of the ordinary RPs) and this is a sensibility that the player portraying them have to acquire in order to dose the amount exposure of his character he will subject the other players to. If he can't figure that out or couldn't care less, not necessarily his character, but himself will become the annoying one.
Exposing people to a story in this sense goes in the same line as PvPing (or exposing people to combat). Make sure people are having as much fun as you are. If not, try again with a different audience.
This community and mod will die, that's a certainty. Freelancer is old, a lot of very good servers and communities have died already and this one will as well, and when it does it won't be due to an excess or drought of in rp system chat.
At some point too much in rp system chat becomes just that, too much, although that threshold is going to vary from person to person. Since you were not breaking rules, real or imagined, who cares? The server has larger issues.
