So I was asking my self one day, why this war of the Hispanics started in the first place. After some minutes of research, I found out that the research station "Atka" was the problem back in the vanilla days. The scientists on this station are trying to create synthetic Cardamine, thus pissing the Outcats off. Unfortunately, the station lies in the territories of the corsairs who, apparently, don't give a damn. After vanilla, the war reached a new dimension with a Front-Line in theta and NOT in the sigmas, where this oh so important station is.
Is this it? Is this tiny little station and the laziness of the corsairs to basically rip it apart the only reason for the "war" ? Or did I miss something? Some other reasons for rivalry - the Bretoninan black market? Or do the corsairs depend on Atka for some reason?
Since the Hispanics have become mighty military forces within the last 10 years, should they really want to grind their gear in eta just over some tiny little station in 17?
I was under the impression that the Corsairs believed they had been abandoned by the Outcasts and that eachother grew to blame the other (And the lawful houses) for the sabotage of the Hispania.
From what i get the Outcast/Corsair war has gone on for so long it is more a tradition than over territorial concerns. That and Both sides are too stubborn to give up killing each other off. If not for the war the two factions might have united and had the potential of becoming a major power in sirius second to none.
The Coalition sabotaged the Hispana Sleeper ship, which caused it to be damaged. The First habitable planet they reached was Crete, and those who would become Corsairs decided to leave the ship and set up shop on Crete, those who stayed would move toward Malta and become Outcasts. Both sides harbor feelings of abandonment toward the other from the schism. That is where the conflict comes from. Check the Wiki for more information.
One other thing: if you listen to rumors on Planet Malta, you'll hear that the Outcasts believe that the Corsairs' artifact trade is competing against their own Cardamine trade. The war is over territory, sense of abandonment, and smuggling.
Carlos Rivera: Corsair Brotherhood Pirate - Retired, shifted to Tripoli Shipyard's Research and Development engineering teams Anthony Cameron: Guild Core Bounty Hunter - Killed in Action, committed suicide after being trapped in Omicron Minor following its destruction Juan Ruiz: Outcast Ghost of Razgriz Pirate - Killed in Action, killed by the Sirius Coalition Revolutionary Army during Bretonian piracy raid Michael Winchester: Liberty Security Force Agent - Missing in Action, likely killed during Rheinland espionage mission or trapped in Rheinland Space Eric McCormick: Order Pilot - Retired, shifted to planetside training of new recruits
Klaw has it right. to a degree. the war has now (i believe) become personal between some of the combatants and instead of -just- a war about territory it has now become personal for many of the combatants which spreads to their units/friends.
Don't forget that even though a war can start over something stupid like that, several generations later the overall culture dictates hatred because of the casualties suffered for so long. (human casualties, treasure)
That and I do wish the Theta > Eta > Alpha route should be deleted, only for the reason that it puts the two factions so close. The Sigmas should be the main battlefield. (Ruiz Base, etc.)
"The thirteen saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace. The foundations of the Mansion House hotel stuck up above the ground. The stone was chipped and split by the fire. It was all that was left of the town of Seney. Even the surface had been burned off the ground.
Nick looked at the burned-over stretch of hillside, where he had expected to find the scattered houses of the town and then walked down the railroad track to the bridge over the river. The river was there."

Think you read the wrong history.. The one you mention is why the Outcasts & the Cyrers don't get along.
As Mwerte said.. Klaw & Zelot have it right
