Deal with the pirate in sense of RP. Just offer him to bring a badly needed commodity to his home on the next run. There you can also test, if the pirate is simply bearing the flag of a faction as an excuse to tax or if he seriously is interested to rp the faction.
However, its indifferent what you do as long as pirate and trader interact with eachother. In most cases it provides fun for all. Thats why we're here.
Good example of bad pirate:
I "TRADER" pull out from a Liberty shipyard dock, turn to trade lanes.
Now, there's 4-5 other ship hanging around.
"3mil or die" in gen. chat. I don't know who this is to?
so I go into docking mode, slowly start to enter the trade lane.
Then the lane is shot out from under me
Again " 3mil or die"
Ok, 1. I don't like being robbed but it's main part of the game.
2. I hate being told " Xmil or Die"
3. I'm stuck in the gate, can't move my adv trans around.
4. i want to move away from gates & start to RP-but I can't move
5. I start getting blasted to ****
*(Now I just got online - no more then 2mins- I'm getting pissed now)
Options : a. Fight & die-teach pirate a lesson
b. Move ship out of way - try to RP for less
c. Hope help arrives- long shot
I took choice "A" - just because your a pirate, doesn't mean you don't have to work alittle at "RPing too"
If your going to get my credits, I want Dinner & a Movie!
I also have a chartacter that is a pirate, I never just: "xmil or die"
I ask to search the ship 1st then I give a lame "search tax" for cargo to go thru this area. And I will lower if the response is kind.
This is what I think RPing is about.

but again flying a huge defenseless ship with no escort. do you RP a suicidal trader? just asking. if you dont you probably have no grounds to complain about the Xmil or die scenario.
Quote:but again flying a huge defenseless ship with no escort. do you RP a suicidal trader?
Depending on the person and ship, that might not be the case. Especially since the bigger ships are anything but defenseless (I'd like if more were like the Whale, but that's another subject). For instance, a Big Dragon has several rather large guns - I'd think that would be adequate in house space.
In the Border Worlds, that does make more sense, but the crew might be arrogant and think they can handle anything. Though I'm inclined to agree with you on your point in this situation.

This is what I think RPing is about.
This has been some of my experiences too. Hence I wrote an open letter to the Pirates of Sirius Here
Edit: Now there are more than a few bad traders. I think both ends of the equation need work to make more people happy. I personally think everyone needs to have a trader character to support themselves. Pirating alone isn't going to keep you going...... Unless the trader is really stupid....

personaly, i think there arn't only stupid traders, but also stupid pirates. Like mentioned above, some pirates just says "stop" and then "give me 2 mill or die", and if they ask me that question, i always ask them "how can i give you 2 mill if my ship (i fly an armoured transport) isn't worth more than 1 mill?"
now some pirates tax me for my size, and hell i am happy to pay them, but most pirates just blow me into spacedust for making that remark.
And about those traders, i hope they get stopped by pirates alot, cause they don't deserve better.

If you're in a ship without cm's you're a sitting duck, thats what i meant. you might be able to take out a single fighter in a larger transport but the odds are against it.

/signed.
However thats where the problem comes in. A lot of people complain that pirates say 2milordaiiii! and shoot. Like Akumabito said it's also a diversionary tactic of traders to farce roleplay to get away.
1. No, you shouldn't say 2 mil or die to anyone in a ship not worth 2 mil or on a run making less than 2 mil. they would not be able to pay you and your request would not be legitimate RP, it would be harassment.
2. you should say '2 mil or die' to someone who is trying to run. You only have a few seconds from the first cd. if you hit them with a cd and they immediately engage and you sit there and RP, you will be RP'ing a broke pilot.
Example number 2 happened to me recently. LH~Phate was awesome at RP'ing in a short sentence. The exact words were not 2 mil or die but it was something equally short but sweet. He managed to RP it out and disrupt me. The hackers wound up with the motherload that day. in short, if you attempt to run, expect to die, no matter what the verbal exchange.

I don't recall you telling anyone to remove Black.Pearl from any posts where I was given similar attention. Tell you what ... when you guys come to my rescue the same way you're coming to this trader's rescue, I'll remove the name.
