Simple. Can I just deactivate the current version with FLMM and activate the new one?
Or must I back up my account IDs, uninstall and re-install FL?

Yep

no need for a complete reinstall, or such things:)

in theory, you can uninstally the 4.84 and reinstall the 4.85 with FLMM.

however - it is advisable that you:

- uninstall 4.84 with FLMM
- uninstall freelancer and ALL its traces from the registry and your private folders
- TAKE DOWN YOUR ACCOUNT ID !!!

defrag the system

- reboot the system and make a 100% fresh installation form your original freelancer CD
- upload 4.85 into FLMM
- install 4.85 onto the fully fresh freelancer 1.0 version you just installed
- run the new disco mod - and setup the links for the server
- enter your old account ID

that is the best way to do it.... every time you "just use FLMM" - things can be left behind. - so - i d advice ( once the public beta starts ) to make a fully fresh installation.

Well, I ask not because I can't/don't back up my ID(s), but because I would just rather not go to the trouble of a re-installation.
If it turns out that just using FLMM doesnt work, I always still have the option of a full clean re-install :)

But hopefully the simple FLMM solution will work (even if it does leave a few scattered fragments of this 'n that) and save me alot of time and impatience.

here is my experience... ( but only with the close beta atm )

- when i uninstall 4.84 in FLMM 1.3 and reinstall 4.85beta5 - i get a CTD

when i do all the steps i described before - the beta runs fine. - so FLMM leaves "something" behind that causes the CTD.

thats why i say - i d suggest to do it. - others in the beta have had no problem with just switching with FLMM....

The easiest way to save your account is to download Korrd's Freelancer Account Manager, scan your PC, export all the accounts into one file, and email that file to yourself.

The account manager has already saved my hide once, so Im a big fan.

As for CTDs from stuff left behind... *shrugs* over 5 years of game modding on and off I have never figured out why some mods for some games on some machines require a reinstall... and some dont.
So I suppose the only way to find out now... is to try:D

The recommended way to de-activate the mod in the manager is to use the 'tools/restore backups' method,
not just hit the de-ac button. Gives a cleaner removal of the current mod being used.
Should stop those niggling little errors.

I never uninstall a mod, I have a "golden" vanilla install in another folder that I copy into the default folder and install the mod to, then I copy it to another directory and run it from there. I never have an issue with uninstall corruption since I started doing it that way. The down side is if you have several mods at a gig each they can eat up a small harddrive.
