Is there a steam community group set up for either Discovery mod or the 24/7 server? Did a search but there's loads of random groups with the name freelancer and discovery, so hard to sift through.
And for those who don't know, if you use steam, you can add freelancer to your games list, allowing you to use the community overlay in game.

and no i don't use steam....
arrr....btw your on my list...if you wish to know what that list is for....PM me...or just sit pretty outside matt. until I find you.....:D
Anyway what certain features does "Steam" provide?
I swear I threw all that software into the alaska gate minefield. :)
Steam is the Valve (game company) content delivery system, for games like half-life, counter strike and the like. It has a handy game "overlay" that you can use with a lot of games. It's accessed by a shortcut (shift+tab), and brings up a transparent interface so you can access your friends list and chat to people without tabbing out of game.
Reason I mentioned the community feature is that you can join groups of people, and see when their playing, and what game.
Theres a fair few demos of games you can try also, and if you have an old copy of half-life lying around, you can activate it there for various game downloads.
Steam is also a brilliant DRM style program. However it is quite nice to players in that it doesn't treat us like criminals like EA's prefered one. It registers your cd key so that you can only use it once but thats it. You can install it as many times as you want on different computers etc. Just need to have your steam login and you are set. With most computers being connected to the internet now, it's a good design.
It is the reason I no longer play Valve games, or any other producer that sign their software up to the Valve system.
I see it as another layer of control that effectively removes your rights to play what you want, when you want. It contains chat features etc to suck in people, but it really is intended to dictate what you can do.
It is not necessary. It provides nothing that cannot be got from other places. It is a restrictive piece of software that is intended to bring money in to developers and advertisers by wrapping up decent games inside an access system that THEY control - not you.
Just my view, but hey, IMHO Steam sucks, so I had to respond. I don't want a war about it, I just wanted to let people who have not seen/used it to know that there are people who are strongly opposed to it.

Cheers
have to say I agree nasty piece of control mechanism which they can store the exact same place they got it from.
X fire is something that is exactly like steam in the sense it gives you updates, it gives you in game chat, it shows your buddies gives you groups and what people are playing. heres the next bit its 100% free an doesnt control what you do.
Except I dont use it because I rather just use plain old MSN messenger and ingame chat that comes with games.... just pointing out a potential better alternative.:D
