My name is Max, glad to see there is sitll a playground for us the spaceflying fans.
I am from the farside end on Erath where you guys are, so if my English makes you all a hard time to read, plz forgive me.
I got to admit, I've spent days reading the forum, but I still haven't got a clear picture about how to play as a RP character, since I've never exprience this kind of gaming style before.
I know that I have to create a character based on the background of FL-DISCO story, and I will, but the question is, I am on Manhattan now, what should I do? Say hi to everyone and start make some credit and reputation? or just role-play the character to live the live? or actually these two answer are the same meaning?
Frankly, I'm alittle nervous and afraid, because this looks totally different from other online games, and there's big differences between us in language and gaming culture, I don't want to make a bad example to make you all feel bad of my country fellow.
I'm looking forward to get some advise here, and wish everyone here have a nice day.:)
I am glad to see you have such a nice attitude, it makes me have faith in new players.
Good you asked the question here, most new players, including myself, were new to roleplay.
Anyways, basics of roleplay is really to behave like the character you play would behave, you gotta "be" that character.
It takes some time to learn it all, but trust me, after a bit, it becomes easy and a lot of fun!
And well, starting out on the server does require you to earn money.
I would recommend that you tell us what kind of a character you would like to play, trader, mercenary, pirate, lawful, bounty hunter,...
Also ask any other questions you want.
Also, I will give you the chance to save yourself some hours of earning start up money.
If you can tell me, what kind of character you would like to play, what you like to do, describe a bit, and if it is okay, I will even give you some money to start out.
Nothing too much though, cause it's more fun when you earn your own money.
If you have any more questions, just ask, I'll be happy to answer.

@swift
First of all, thank you for your time and warming welcome.
Here's what I have in mind:
The character is a son of a free trader who was actually a spy of a corporation(s) and was killed in a reactor "accident".
Therefore when he found out (dunno how, I'm still thinking, maybe a diary or so)that his father was in fact assassinated, he determine to find out the truth and revenge.
I think this would make him merely an unlawful one who's against corporations, I think mercenary type character would be fine since their world is full of rumors and lots of conspiracy, and he have no problems with police or military.
Well, if that corporation was Ageira, you could be a Lane Hacker.
I don't know too much about Lane Hackers, but they are "disgruntled former Ageira employees" and probably anyone strongly against Ageira can be a Lane Hacker too.
Or, you can just make him a Freelancer. Merc makes more of a "I am in it for the money" statement, while a Freelancer ID can mean a real lot of things.
Try talking to the leaders of the Hellfire Legion faction, they are a kinda Lane Hacker faction, mention this to them, and ask if they think this kind of story would fit their faction well.
Or you can always be an indie of course. Btw, an "independent" is just someone that still IS a part of a faction, just not a player faction. He is still bound by rules of the faction he plays of course.

Which corporation it might be, I haven't decided yet, Ageria or some other house corporations maybe.
So if he is to be unlawful, I did have LH cross my mind, it would probably the best choice for my fisrttime RP charachter, which is smaller scale (compare to some other faction) and should be easier to start with.
Freelancer would be cool, but I think I should try it after I get familiar with this RP system.
Another question, if he will be a LH, do I just start acting as an unlawful, or I should do some trading first and get some better gear before that. I know it's up to me, but I hope to get some more advise before I hit the road.
Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'll try to get some info about LH factions, and get things rolling.:)
Well you can play this two ways I think. You can start acting unlawful as soon as possible with that character. You can make money by doing missions or starting another character as a trader that will always be a trader (you're probably going to do this eventually anyway, it's the easiest way to make money).
The other option is to play your character as a trader and have the discovery happen later at some point when you have enough money. The downside of this method is it takes a fair amount of credits to get a ship with a good sized cargo hold and you lose 50% of the credits you put into a ship as soon as you buy it. The upside is it will give you some practice with playing the role of that character, figuring out how he acts before this crisis happens, although the first method will give you some experience to.
PM me if you want some startup cash, I might have a character that could be motivated to help you.
