So my next "character" is going to be a small crew of scientists. Growing increasingly frustrated with the short-sighted profit motives of corporate-backed science, the soul crushing bureaucracy of government sponsored research, and the bickering and backstabbing of academia, they left their former positions and scraped together enough cash to purchase a small freighter stocked with scientific equipment (much of it "borrowed" from their previous employers) and beer. Their goal is to do pure research, with no strings attached, and to distribute their findings to the public (in the form of forum posts filled with pretty screenshots and a pseudo-scientific babbling). And frequent trips to Curacao to discuss their latest findings over Mai Tais on the beach.
What's a good choice of ship for the hard thinkin', hard drinkin' men and women of Science Without Borders? Desirable attributes include: cheap, reliable, cheap, not overly associated with any particular faction, cheap, cool-looking, and cheap.
Also, suggestions for interesting, research-worthy astronomical <strike>phenomenons</strike> <strike>phenomenae</strike> <strike>phemon-</strike> neat looking stuff in space would be greatly appreciated.
X-Shuttle. It's really your only choice that fits all of those. Doesn't look all that cheap, but other than that it's good. Around 2mil, standard size freighter, infocard indicates that it was designed for exploration.
You can get it from Corfu Base (Omicron Theta) or Planet Harris (Tau-31).
The Spatial is an IMG ship. Now, they may be willing to sell it to you, but it *does* have that association. It does look pretty cheap, thanks to the texture...
Yea the Dromedary is actually a decent idea. 5 C5 Turrets, 1 C7 and 2 C8 guns, and it is pretty decent.
Maybe not as strong as a VHF, but it works for my Freelancer when I ain't in my gunboat.
As for the Spatial...It looks like something I would make if I was fresh out of high school.
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs
Kadesh Freighter (Planet Los Angeles) might fit. It's whitish and sterile-looking, like you would expect a research vessel to look. And it's cheap, under 2mil I think. Or maybe an Armored Transport would be suitable.
The X-Shuttle is ugly and green and not at all fitting for Freelancer... I hate it. I hate it so much.
Maybe even a Camara Freighter? That's a nice ship.

At least the X-Shuttle is a decent model that doesn't fit, as opposed to an ugly model that doesn't fit.
