I am trying to place myself and be part of the forum in and out of the game. I am finding it more and more difficult now as the time, mods, and rules pass by. I started during 4.84 about a month before the new mods had begun rushing in. I had a blast! I had dug up the disk from cleaning out a foot locker and within two days of digging in the net and downloading I was immersed in a fun interacting environment. That soon came crashing down though after 4.84. I was being informed I needed to be enrolled in a faction for a particular ship or your an indie so you are a outsider, have you not read the forums yet, do you know of the rules yet, do you not know your RP yet, shame on you. As a trader and new comer it was a rude wake up call.
The environment is less than friendly to new comers, now. So many pitfalls, for newbies to make mistakes and the repercussions are so high. I make it a point to explain all that needs to be for a new comer (when I come across one) and where and what to do to avoid and what the player can do and not do. (I spend 30 to 45 minutes in typing in PM to do this) I don't want the new player to get the wakeup call that I did.
I believe Discovery is losing its flavor. New comers need to be relished and the old maintained. A balance between the two is important. Its an apparent, with the things that are going on, new players are less desirable and the environment is structured for the experienced players. The lack of middle ground is slipping.
Another particular thorn is the admins and behaviors said and unsaid are effecting the environment, players, and Freelancer.
The admins, capabilities in lack of in communication, the ability to be neutral, fair minded and good judgment is grossly appalling. Not to mention when you do make a mistake, the hammer comes down like a Battleship to a Light Fighter.
My own personal experiences with admins have concluded less than admiration. I had purchased a cruiser at the Northfolk shipyard and a Liberty Navy ID, a player had told me that I was incorrect and I needed a proper ID, I went to the forums to ask for help and where I could find the proper id. I had a few responses to direct me towards the proper solution (partial information and not the total picture). Within 5 minutes of posting I had received a Sanction Tab and a Sanction Warning within my Hold and all else items removed; without any explanation on how to solve or to any guidance to fix the situation in the pm or forum pm. This is not an example on how admins should deal with the problems. No information about recruit ids or about proper ways of purchasing; just bam here you go. (This is my first hand experience with an admin.) My second experience with an admin, was in front of Planet Manhattan and without provocation or notice, killed (simultaneously) 10 plus players including myself (gull trader) within a instant.
The individual players are more forgiving and at least discuss the mistake. From reading the posts and interacting with other players, come to find the red IFF tag to be true: "Hostile". To be honest, I have come to dislike the admins in general and for what you represent. Your perception and reputation has brought you to this level. I have been an OSC liner, a Junker salvager, a LNS LABC, a Hacker Battleship, a Freelancer smuggler, and an Independent Miner. The constant is, in no matter what role I play and or who I interact with the complaints are the same. The admins this or the admins that. Did you hear what they did this time or that. I am sensing a fear and distrust portrayed from players toward the interaction of admins and the decisions they make. In addition, the complaints to the rules and regulations being implemented now into the Freelancer Game. Descriptions such as: Harsher, less-forgiving, and too extreme. Lets also talk on the Admins accountability, I see none. No checks and balances in placed to maintain a happy enjoyable environment. . Admins your actions directly affect players opinion and attitude towards the game. It is just that simple!
Now with weapon restrictions, ship restrictions, faction restrictions, rule restrictions, communication restrictions, and whether I am in or out of oorp or ooc in game or on forum, its nearly maddening now, I worry more about what the rules are and how I deal and interact with others and visa versa. It has gotten to the point with me that I am loosing drastic interest in the game in its entirety.
As I progress in this game, I am finding it more restrictive, my roles for characters is more limited, my environment is becoming less applicable and enjoyable. I have even stopped talking about Freelancer all together to friends and associates, who would be interested in such a forum of interaction, knowing on what is happening. They have asked my about it, and I just tell them not to bother and we discuss other forum gaming sites from there.
I know what some of the responses might be to this are; If you dont like it, go somewhere else.,
well, thats the point then....

Noted.
Wow. What a post.
Surprised it was missed, but I suppose today has been a busy day.
"Ain't no love, in the heart of the city.."
I said where's the love?
"Ain't no love, in the heart of town.."
Yeah..
i believe these lyrics cover my thoughts rather well.
the forums used to be an awesome place before. now, i ignore most of it (except the dev section, HF related posts, and flood. long live flood). too much flamage, too many people with short tempers, no sense of respect for other members are the "in" thing, which like you said, aint doing discovery any good.
i guess that was meant to be, due to discovery's size increasing exponentially, or i guess its because of a buncha people who joined us here and helped influence the forums into what they are. either way, its screwed. a couple of welcome posts covered with sugar and sweetness isnt enough to cover all the other harsh things a new comer witnesses on discovery, and your post proves my point rather well.
all i gotta say is, if discovery gets to you too much, just ignore it all. my motto on discovery has been, and still is "ignorance is bliss", and thanks to it, i've ignored ALOT of bull**** brought up and flung across at me etc. imo, tis the only way to play a game with more restrictions than a high security prison with timed slots for prisoners to have their share of the shared toilet.
I can't help but agree with most of your post. Escpecially the last bit. too many people agree with something without knowing what the hell they are even agreeing with.
You bought a capital ship, and didn't get the right ID?
So, you didn't read the rules regarding that? I think you should have read the ID carefully again.
Yes, Discovery is getting tighter and tighter with more rules, but with the sudden influx of new players and rule-breaking, the leash needs to be tightened.
However, I do notice that the dog's starting to choke...
Have you ever tried to plane a piece of wood?
We all know that wood has a grain that goes only one way, and when you try to plane with the grain you get nothing. The Plane runs across the wood and slices off little wood with little resistance.
However, when you Plane against the grain it suddenly becomes more difficult, and the bladed edge starts slicing and chipping pieces of wood off all over the place, creating a real mess. Push too hard and you'll cut too deep into the wood, and likely damage your Plane or leave a bad mark on the wood.
But, then again, he shouldn't have bought the cruiser without proper preparation.
I can understand his situation, though. Even back when I just started, there were too many rules to count, and I practically learned all the rules in-game, when playing with other people. Not by reading the server rules on the forum. (Note: I do not condone this kind of behavior. I was a nub back then. Read the server rules, and learn it by heard if you want to succeed here.)
So many rules, and it's hard to keep track of everything.
I didn't get sanctioned like that because I never bought a cap until 4.85's nearcoming, but that's beside the point.
What I'm trying to say is, be familiar with the rules, and know them, before taking such a big step and buying the capital ship.
i was trying out plenty of ships... - once i got to the old outcast destroyer. - i bourght it - having a wrong ID in the hold.
just by incidence - caylith was in malta orbit coordinating some stuff there - she told me that it was wrong to fly that ship with my current ID - and said that i should do outcast missions now to buy the ID and get the tag.
a neutral guideline, a little help to satisfy the rules. - 20 min later i had the ID and the tag. - had i received an official sanction blanket and a warning, i would have been quite unhappy. - but of course.... that was back then .. ( btw. 30 min later i was blown to pieces by a kusari destroyer - and 2 hours later, i had sold the destroyer ... and that was fun, too..... discover things until you found something that you liked )
I concur with most of what's been said. However, I don't agree that this is anything new. When I arrived on the server I had a problem with 1 particular admin who I percieved to be utterly corrupt and biassed towards factions he was involved in. I wasn't afraid to PM other admins of my concerns. This individual is no longer an admin for whatever reason.
I have NEVER been sanctioned for rule breaking, because I was lucky enough to do my "learning" as RP laws came into force. I originally arrived when it wasn't an issue for a Corsair to fly a Ravens Talon, where Blood Dragons would also fly Ravens Talons and regularly invade Gamma for the PVP. I'm happy that those days are over, but I realise that I have learned how to get by on Discovery server because I've been here since the rules on RP began evolving.
It seems that trying to learn to get by on this server is now illegal. To learn, one must make mistakes. It's a sad state of affairs that it seems like 9/10 of new players are labelled as rulebreaking idiots, sanctioned and ultimately leave the server. That's part of the reason why faction membership percentages are so low; new players aren't here long enough to join factions. They get driven away by unfriendly attitude and mind-boggling rules before they have the chance.
My biggest issue is the suppression of discussion. I was appalled to hear that Tenacity's RP threads such as character biographies had been deleted. This is the game-community equivalent of burning books, and completely abhorrent.
I wholeheartedly expect this topic to be locked before it reaches it's 4th page. That's how discovery forums work.
