We all know that traders don't like the RP of most pirates. From my point of view, absolutely understandable, since xmillordie and comments to hurry up are almost all I ever get to hear from those who pirate me.
But today, I thought a bit more into it.
<span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:100%]a few steps to make your Pirate-RP appear to be good RP
First of all: this is not about long speeches and formal talk before engaging, posting such a thread would be a total waste of time. This thread is about small actions that take little effort, but (from my point of view, at least) make a big difference.
scale your demands and don't ask for too much
use /setmsg
be creative
don't overdo it
Scaling your demands:
Don't demand 2 millions from a Freighter. Even 1 million is a pretty high demand when dealing with freighters (especially don't do it like my "favourite pirate", name will NOT be mentioned, and demand 5 millions from a Camara). And keep the size of the victims cargo bay in mind when you issue your demand. A Heron(that Train with two links)-pilot will be less willing to hand over 5 millions than a Stork(that Train with four links)-pilot.
Using /setmsg:
With /setmsg N <message>, you can set up to 10 predefined messages that you can broadcast over a wanted channel.
Quote:Set message slot N to the specified message; if no message then the slot is cleared and slots 0-9 are valid. If a #t tag is in <message> this tag will be replaced with the current target name. If a #c tag is in <message> this tag will be replaced with your current map grid location.
Creativity:
Every pirate I've encountered so far talked about "killing" me. That's boring. How about "...or I'll blow up your ship", or "...and you can pass"
Be creative and put a little thought into it.
But don't overdo it:
Stay in character, only use words your character would use, blahblahblah, you know the drill. No need for long speeches, no matter if predefined or improvised (unless your character likes to hold long speeches).
Now an example:
TraderA is flying a BWT (3500 cargo) full of Industrial Materials.
He is stopped by PirateA, who issues his demand like this:
PirateA: 10 mill or die
Now, in a parallel universe, TraderA is stopped by PirateB.
PirateB has previously set up a predefined message. He typed
/setmsg 1 Alright, #t. You give me four million credits right now, or I'll blow up yer ship!
Now he can simply target TraderA and then type /l1 to broadcast the following in the local chat:
PirateB: Alright, TraderA. You give me four million credits right now, or I'll blow up yer ship!
Which encounter sounds better? And which pirate is more likely to get his/her money without a fight?
When I had a pirating char this was my thing:
fighters/bombers/cap ships = usually wont pirate unless I'm in a group
freighters = 250.000 - 500.000 credits
transports rank 65 - 70 = 1.500.000 - 2.500.000
transports 70 + = 2.500.000 - 4.000.000
Since I type really fast, it's more effective typing out phrases then using a stupid and anti-RP biased set msg macro.
When I do pirate, my demands are thought-out complete sentences.
"The path to hell is paved with good intentions."
Quote:* Nodoka Hanamura is all about that SSH life
"There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy - from our odyssey into Hell, we have returned with a gift."
Please don't. Even pirates should take themselfes 10 more seconds to write something more creative.
And not the same stuff all the time.
You need to differentiate between "Profit-Pirates" and "RP-Pirates".
Me for example, I'm never/rarely demanding more than 100k credits (minimum you can enter with /givecash), with my LR-'s. I enjoy more in Roleplaying with traders, which leads to another problem: so called "Powertraders".
So tell me who's better? The "2milordie-Pirate" or the "mute Powertrader"...
However, I never complained about getting robbed for 10+ millions (flying an empty transport) or my Bloodhound (1,900 hull strength) getting shoot by multiple Caps/Snubs.
I always try to make the best out of every situation/survive the conflict.

In yet another parallel universe, TraderA is stopped by PirateB. PirateB /l1 (<name>: What do we have here? Cut your engines drop shields and face away from the trade lane, #t!). He sees the cargo is valuble but isn't in it for the cash, /local <name>: Valuble cargo from a far away land? Transfer 50 thousand credits for your safe passage!
What is more likely to get the pirate paid? If you chose the third universe, you're dead wrong!
Piracy is in my opinion just like trading 'reacting to and with the environment'
decent RP while pirating is not difficult, when I pirate I do my most best
to get a good rp response from my target, I have some phrases
such as, Hold yer throttle and stand still, cut yer engines lad,
behind a setmsg, rest is all time typed out, because RP is an action/reaction game...
Do not dictate what is RP and what is not. It has nothing to do with demand size or setmsgs.

Anyone who has ever pirated on this server before knows that /setmsg is a valuable tool. Period.
You're not a bad RPer if you make strategic use of that feature.
