I enjoy FL. I just discovered the mod and have been playing it a week or so. I am up to a net worth of maybe 8 million, and I am flying my Camera from Colorado to Stuttgart trying to make more cash so I can get in a decent sized transport or tougher fighter.
My wife pointed out to me that whenever she looks at the screen when I am playing its always the same scene: my ship going through a trade lane. She doesn't get why I enjoy the game. I tell her there is more to it and I am just not to that point yet, but I don't really know where that point is.
I think I need to start some sort of RP, but don't really know how. I would love to actually blow something up, but I am not strong enough to take on anyone in my freighter, aside form the NPCs that interrupt my trade lane in New York or maybe Texas.
Also there are lots of disco rules and mechanics I don't understand fully yet:
I am flying from Colorado to Stuttgart. Can I do that, or is that not in RP because of a war?
Where do you find bounties; are they here in toe forums somewhere or from the bars on various stations?
What is the deal with getting a prefix and suffix? I am currently flying with a freelancer ID, do I need to rename my character to have some tag on it?
I have not done much to alter the default faction reps, so I guess I am playing as a lawful. Does that mean if I see rogues attacking someone I am obligated to help? I usually try to race by and not get attacked myself.
I have persuaded a few friends to try Discovery. We will probably all just play in a group. Do we need to make some sort of faction to do that, or can we just all have freelancer IDs?
Thanks in advance for the ideas/suggestionsnks to other threads, etc.

Depends what you haul, but yes it might be seen as "smuggling" but that's fine in RP for a freelancer. Just make the best out of it when they try to stop you.

It's a bit messy but you should be able to find some.

Any prefix or suffix is entirely optional, I'd even say it's better not to use one on the start (with friends) else you'll get a lot of people asking you what does your "faction" do.

If you use Freelancer ID you are not obliged to do anything.

No you don't need to make a player faction. I'd say use Freelancer ID to look around, but with time you'll fine it more fun to stick with some NPC faction.

My wife says that every time she looks on the screen I'm shooting someone/something....;)
Igiss says: Martin, you give them a finger, they bite off your arm.
Welcome to Disco sir, and I will embed my answers next to your questions:

I am flying from Colorado to Stuttgart. Can I do that, or is that not in RP because of a war? There is an embargo on due to the war, Check the Diplomatic channels under roleplaying to see what is and isnt allowed.
Where do you find bounties; are they here in toe forums somewhere or from the bars on various stations? Again, under the Roleplay section of the board, check for employment offices
What is the deal with getting a prefix and suffix? I am currently flying with a freelancer ID, do I need to rename my character to have some tag on it? Tags are usually for official / unofficial factions. Don't use them unless you join one.

I would like to add that i run a help chat on skype where you might be able to get quicker answers and better back and forth. We can help you develop your RP and answer pretty much any question in real time. It's also a greet place to meet members of the community and network. See the link in my sig if you are interested.
Sir, if more new players acted the way you do, our community would be in a much nicer shape. My advice to you is:
-join a faction: gives you something to do, and always friendly people to help. I'm personally in the LN, TAZ, XA and LR. Now, that must look a tad weird, bunch of letters:P. That's the Lib Navy, Zoners, Xenos and Rogues.
-keep an eye on the forum called RP Hub. That's where all the Rp goes on:)
-look out for me ingame (all my characters have the initials SK) and I can point out some fun stuff to do, or keep an eye out for any ships tagged [The_Angels]. These people are here to help you out:)
That's all I have the energy to write on an iPhone... Tazarus is a good person to talk to in regards to new stuff, as are Sassafras, Dusty Lens, HeavyMetalQueen and Malacalypse (People who o can think of from the top of my head, there are plenty of others aswell)
It took me awhile to find the embargo, here it is so you don't have to: linky
At any rate, the Role-Playing section has a pinned thread called "The Laws of Sirius" that might help. The Employment Office has bounties posted- the big ones are linked to in a pinned thread at the top.
As for RP... you can do a whole lot in RP, but remember that some RP results in people shooting you. While it's fully possible to just leave people to get killed by Rogues, if (say) the LPI ask you to help out and you just go on your merry way, they may take offense to further operations in Liberty. It's an RP consequence for RP, nothing wrong with it. Think about what people may think of your actions, and let that be your guide to what you can and cannot do.
As for factions, a faction is a lot of work. If you want to fly as a group, just fly. You can easily remember each others names, and so long as your group can figure some RP on the fly for why you're hanging around, you're good (in other words, having your Freelancers and whatnot convoy up and mess around is fine, having your Blood Dragon hang with your mate's KNF is not).
If you've got any further questions, feel free to ask. We're here to help, that's the whole idea of a community.

Running a faction is a lot of work. Being in one can be a lot of work but that varies from faction to faction. Trading factions are generally less work and combat factions more, but it still varies a great deal.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am reading over the post about the embargo on Rheinland form Liberty. It said bringing in non-military goods is ok, but "All transports and freighters exporting goods from Liberty to Rheinland will still be asked to refrain from entering Hudson and Bering. Those ships will be turned back or asked to sell their cargo on planet Houston."
So does this mean I can't do it, or I shouldn't, but if I can make it with no one stopping me then it is ok. Is the embargo an RP thing and I can RP through it, or a server rule?
