the prototype was pretty awesome aswell esp. for the combat system (which got released as a mini-team deathmatch)

I couldn't get into SoSE.

But on the strategy end, I'll recommend Space Empires IV and Master of Orion 2. I'm pretty crappy at both, admittely, but they're fun.
