The problem with the cocpit views is that they are quite resricted in terms of Field of View. You also cant see your own ship, so theres no looking down onto the nose of your Rogues Gunboat and the 3 turrets perched on the top.

Make it so you can't see the side walls or ceiling and have multiple screen/window things side by side to replicate the multiple windows you can see on the outside? The textures are also a bit greyish, other than that though, quite a good start there.
EDIT: cliched I know
i realize that there are mutliple light reflecting surfaces on the current cockpit gfx, so getting overly titchy would be complicated. Perhaps just adding a floor and a console or three (simple 1d surfaces in the right place) would make a fighter cockpit feel more large.
Anyway, theres about a million ship bridge concept art pieces out there...but i think simple changes to the current ones would be less glitchy and provide the change us Cap Capn's are seeking.
Partial gravedig, but I know for a fact that when I went to freeworlds for a week, they had very detailed cockpits for all of the ships there, they were even developing cockpits with glowmaps for the next version, meaning lights and all of that goodness.

Since my ship models are horrible, maybe I'll give these a shot instead =P
As far as not being able to see your own ship model from cockpit view... that can be fixed. If we make a unique bridge view for each capital ship, then we can actually put portions of the ship model in the viewport. Problem is, there's a lot of ships out there, and that will take a ton of modelling. I think at first, I'll just create a generic bridge that can be used for all caps temporarily.
