I had in mind to use the same concept for the LSF for a while. Although, time and money lacks. If that concept works out well I'll fully implement it too.
Now, as for the concerns related to chars deaths:
Best is to use some kind of code or object to indicate when you have died. Best I would recommend is to unmount the scanner when you respawn. Players won't be able to take off with the ships and will catch the msg pretty quickly.
Although, a msg dump, or some kind of "report dump" would be useful to know when the ship was killed and who was flying it. Some kind of log. Maybe a google doc? Like, if you die, you mark the time in GMT0 and your name beside the ship' name.
Using Skype WILL cause issues...It is resources hungry and unpractical for such applications. Also, bugs are very...common (windows not opening, etc)
when you die, switch to a different character and use the /privatemsg command to send a saved message to the previous character of the format:
Killed in <x System> by <y Character> at <z Time> - <Forumname>
e.g. HMS-Vanguard dies, I switch to another character and type:
/privatemsg BAF|HMS-Vanguard Killed in Leeds by [KNF]Sulu at 21:34 GMT - LeMaitre
Next time someone logs on that character, the message will pop up, they can SS it as evidence and see at a glance whether or not the character is useable again yet or not.
