You can do that. You can even make a gun slot accept class 2, 5, and 6 guns only, plus level 3 turrets, and level 9 cruiser turrets.
I find the most use out of my liberty gunboat when I charge the other guy with big guns blasting. Works great at close range because the forward gun has lower projectile speed.
I don't really see the point of being able to put a turret on that slot, it would still have an extremely small firing arch where you'd probably be better off sticking with the forward gun.
It works well against transports. I'm not so sure that it would work well against capital ships. You'd need to get in range of the capital ship's guns and fly on a fairly predictable path to ensure a hit. Haven't tried it against fighters/bombers. Against other gunboats, it's handy, provided they don't have one too.
Well I've come to the decision (after flying a gunboat with a forward gun for an hour) that the gunboats are just about perfect, except for the kusari gunboat forward gun projectile.
' Wrote:The problem is, the turning arc is determined by a hardpoint, not a gun. Even if you equipped a class 8 turret to your forward gun hardpoint, it would still only turn the 15 or so degrees it usually does. The game isn't able to change the values of these turning arcs dynamically, because they are stored in the CMP file along with the ship model.
Actually, If you look at gun models. They have an HPConnect with a Radius set to it.
This is why the AI Core SHF can fireits AI Guns in a full 360 around the ship.
The HPWeapon points are set as Fixed hardpoints, without a radius of their own.
My guess is that makes it use the Weapon model's HPConnect Radius.
So with that, you -could- make a Hardpoint's firing arc be dependent on the type of gun you have placed.

Sorry, but you're wrong. I just tested it myself then -- yes the AI Drone can shoot backwards with it's AI Stem Guns. But it can also do it with Purple Goddesses. That means the 360 degree turning is to do with the Ship Hardpoint, not the Gun Hardpoint.
Edit:
Actually, more I think about it seems I was wrong about this. The AI Drones gun hardpoints have 0 degree turning, that must mean it takes the turning radius from the Gun instead.
It would take some changing of hardpoints but it could work. Currently the Gunboat Forward cannons are set to revolute, they'd all need to be changed to fixed. Then we would need Gunboat forward cannon unique models and have them set as a limited turning arc of 15, which is what they currently have. Unfotrunately that means any Gunboat which equips a turret to their forward cannon slot would be able to fire that turret 360 degrees with this method, and that doesn't seem right to me.
Gunboats are pretty darn good at what they are for (killing fighters/bombers). It is a pretty good idea making the slot accept turrets, but, can we get a few differet types of forward guns? It would be fun to be able to customize them just a little more.

As much as i'm amused to read the below statement, as thats what I had originally stated....Heres some screens to look at.
The first, is the Purple Goddess, you will see it has a 360 Revolute HPConnect Hardpoint
The second, is the Magma Hammer, which I use on Guardian.059's AI SHF. You will see it has a 30 Revolute HPConnect Hardpoint.

As I said, I'm glad you corrected yourself. This is what I had originally stated. That AI Drone Hardpoints are fixed HPWeapon Hardpoints, yet their guns and certain others (depending on their individual HPConnect Rotation Settings) can be fired in a full 360 degree arc.
I've looked at the gunboats with forward guns.
Kusari, Orca, Blood Dragon, and Rheinland are on spots that would have atleast a 320-340 degree forward arc. This would make it 90% reasonable to allow regular turret usage with a 360 firing arc on these ships.
Nomad(this is more the fact that the ship is organic), Liberty, and Bretonia are on spots that would without a doubt be capable of a 360 arc. This would make it 100% reasonable to allow regular turret usage with a 360 firing arc on these ships.
Council, and Gallic Royal are on spots that are limited to forward arcs. This would limit them to forward guns only. But still no reason to disallow the use of regular turrets in favor of the Gunboat Forward Gun.
Quite personally, I don't like any gunboat with a forward gun. I tend to have much better use for the Gunboat with 1-2 additional turrets and no Forward Gun than I do for a Gunboat with 1-2 less turrets and a Forward Gun
Also, the Nomad Infocard is messed up. It has a forward gun yet the infocard shows "Gun/Turret Mounts: 0/6" instead of Gun/Turret Mounts: 1/5
