All the same, In my opinion? discovery *is* Freelancer 2, or as good as it gets.
If I could make a Freelancer 2, I would take the original engine plus the latest version of Discovery and make these changes;
1; original storyline is playable and balanced to the new changes
2; there is a new storyline, epic and longer than the first
3; multi-player connectivity more optimized to reduce lag
4; visual engine supports specular maps and normal maps, poly-count limit raised by 100,000
5; all imports killed off
6; house specific stations
7; player docking
8; NPC wingmen
9; fix all the missing voice files and comm helmets.
Doesn't it strike anyone as amazing that in theory just through the work of a dedicated community we can theoretically pull off all but #'s 3 & 4?
Not that I'm saying we should devote resources to #'s 1 & 2, but still the other 5 possible/in-progress items are huge accomplishments that may be in future mod versions....
You're right. With enough time and labour we could theoretically create a Freelancer 2 using the Discovery mod. In my opinion, 7 would be the most important to do. A carrier that can't have a wing of fighters hidden inside is just a big-ass dreadnought.

I wouldn't take the old engine. I would take a new engine, or write a new one, to emulate the important parts of FL gameplay. Get the physics (i.e no 90 degree NPC turns:D) working properly. There's too much focus on graphics at the expense of gameplay.
FL is completly different to EVE so no copying that either. Dunno.
I like FL as it is really. You learn to live with the idiosyncrasies of the game really.

I agree, but it has been say hundreds of times its not doable due to many reasons.
yeah i did like some of those ships, there's inspiration that could be drawn from them.
Edit: and in regards to a previous thread, is that some asymmetrical ships i see there?:P
i think on the whole, alot of what i could see there looked a bit like the X series
'Choo kidding me? That looks sexy and sleek. I would love to play FL2. As long as there was a PC version for Discovery to expand on, I would definitely buy it.
Planetary battles; Imagine Prague. So you get to your ship, to find a crapbunch of Rheinies there. Well, fight your way out. Watch out for the gravity.
More intense capship battles; think freespace. Two gargantuan ships broadsiding one another, volleying hails of laser blasts, maybe a railgun, missile or beam cannon thrown in. Assault transports would dock with and commandeer ships.
Nebulas. Pirates hiding in wait.. Then, poof! A Rapscallion pirate transports flies out of the cloud, ambushing the seemingly safe convoy.
