I agree with Dab, encryption should only be used for things that are highly sensitive. The reason there's been so much lately is because of the March Conspiricy (Even though it's april now... hm.). Lot's of top secret info going on atm.

I really have no stake in this since I just play discovery on a private lan server but this thread caught my eye since I do have lots of RL background with encrypted communications I thought I would toss in my unwanted 2 cents.
The reason why organizations and countries stopped encrypting "only the important stuff" shortly after they decided that encrypting the important stuff was a good idea is it allowed for C3I shaping. In other words once encrypted communications starts the enemy knows something is up. More importantly once shaping is analyzed eg mapping communications, its no longer important to know what the msg said. Just blow up the buildings that act as encrypted communications hubs. Now nearly everything is encrypted in some form. even a large percentage of multinational orgs (companies, ngos, etc) encrypt all communications.
Anyway since I'm a fan of RP'ing I offer this suggestion if you guys really want to make it interesting just decide on a standard encryption application to be used server wide and then severely limit the limit the key length and bit strength. That way your opponents can take a shot at cracking the code. Change the key once a week or month or whatever for added drama.
If im way out of line on this just ignore me. As I mentioned this was just something that caught my eye.
Translation:
Well, as far as I'm concerned, I can type whatever encryption you want so I'm not too annoyed I just select the text and decrypt. Typed in 3 different encryptions:P

A useful tool I came across since the SCRA's xxxxxxxx encryption:P
edit: oops! thought you don't use that anymore.
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
Well AW uses a bit of a short key on ours, so if you knew what you were doing, you could likely crack it. But I don't think we have people here that can. We also only use it for important information because we have ALWAYS talked about things we don't want others to know about. But we used it on forums before those forums died for who knows why.
Besides, making an enemy, or even someone neutral, suspicious of our use of it could be quite useful.

Oho!!!! I get it. You could use different consecutive encryptions for the really important stuff. So, we could use one, then type in another!!!! Very nice....
I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.
