Lightwave seems to be the most advanced-and expensive-3D engine out there. But as said, it's not our only option.
While ingame footage would be easiest, Camera Ships can only do so much. Once we figure out filming method, we need to proofread and add to my script. And then figure out voices. We have many eager voices, I'm sure.
Autodesk Maya is the industry standard for this type of work. Lightwave is used primarily for rendering rather than composition as it is one of the fastest known engines known to man, along with say the Carrara engine.
Any 3D application you choose carries its own learning curb and down-sides. To get a result such as the trailer such as the Freespace trailer, you would almost certainly need official training, unless you made it a project with several groups of people over a span of a year or so.
Its not imposable, but we arn't exactly in an ideal environment to make such a production.
"Three o'clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do."
I'm with Cannon on this one. All we need with nin-game footage is intelligent editing, good shooting, and a plan. When you start doing production rendering we get into a whole lot more work.
Hear me out here people!
I was planning on making an OPG (before we called it quits) trailer, where we would display the new things so we can promote the freelancer as well.
*Well, music is pretty quiet for first 20 seconds, that gives enough time for few short fly by video clips. One of few osirises and legate, one of bomber squad and one of.. for example, outcast fleet.
* 0:28 - music starts heating up. The video changes to the scenes of destruction almost immediately, well, not scenes of destruction but the combat between those two fleets. The combat itself would be filmed from a pretorian's angle, coupled with few extra cameras zooming around getting great shots while they fight. Music keeps increasing
* 0:58 - music gives (because prodigy is awesome) great few seconds of "breathing pause", that's when Outcast fleet grows by fleet of smaller fighters and few of their awesome gunboats. Camera focus on gunboats.
(no need to say how awesome it is when he says "invaders must die!")
*1:32 or so, he keeps repeating invaders must die. It's a perfect place to start showing some ships exploding in that battle. Throw in couple of shots of how it looks like from Legate's view, pretorian blowing up someone, and Outcast fleet blowing up an Osiris.
*1:47 no background beat. could it be reinforcement time? Hell no, it's the repair ship, around 2:00 music kinda tones down and it's a perfect time for few trade - repair shots
*2:12 music starts to increase again, maybe it's time to switch the video to a BMM mining op? And since music has (ta na na na na) then silence, (then ta na na na na) again, you can display a fleet of BMM, defenseless, mining. then you can display a fleet of Molly pirate transes + their awesome bombers + 1 gunboat approaching. Best view would be mining ships filmed with camera ship.
But for Mollies, with actually one guy leading the fleet in formation and hitting V for behind view, and then filming.
* 2:29 **** hits the fan, bmm tries to flee, but mollies just caught them too well. Show the video of ships being disabled. There's enough suspense time to actually show the video of one mining ship trying to brake lose, hit it with a Snac and make it explode around 3:01 when he says "we are the prodigy"
There's few seconds after that of dead silence, but then another invaders must die voice comes, and BMM fleet starts to get wiped out.
That's where music ends in video, but you can totally edit the bit from the beginning with just quiet beat and put something like
"Discovery RP server. Join in and leave the mercy behind."
For some time, i've been thinking of making some trailer on my own, and now finally i found some time, and i'll start making it. Direct ingame action, events (fraps), edited in after effects/sony vegas.
