The purpose of removing armor upgrades would not to require a rebalance of the entire game, but to shorten fights.
Armor should be like the Cheetah thruster. It's expensive, and it doesn't give you much of an advantage. A possible way to do this would be to add the possibility of your armor being destroyed, by adding it as a hardpointed item. This would probably be more work than it would be worth, though.
Ehh...im not proposing to remove the upgrades. I'm just saying that I'd challenge players to fly without one for a month or a week to return to that feeling of vulnerability. It' really improves flight skills.

Uh. What? You've not read up on that, have you? There is already a Nova. And explosive torpedoes are useless against capital ships unless they can hit the shield generator. If they can't, they won't even dent it.
That aside, mini razors and nukes are rather more dangerous to fighters than SNACs, as far as I'm concerned...
And, yeah. Flying without armour is a learning experience. I had Mark 2 armour on my most frequently used fighter for about three months. That's 1.7*base armour. IIRC, one mini razor hit would get me.
