When I think of (Space) Mercenaries in Movies I can only remember them using fast ships, the Millenium Falcon, or the Outrider. Both from Star Wars, both Freighters, but Star Wars doesnt have Gunboats and the ships are having turrets and are pretty good armoured. As well the both are two of the fastest ships in that Story.
As well I think that the size of the ship is playing a big part. The heavier, the bigger -> Size of the Crew raises. I think the ship should be flown by two Pilots. Maybe something slightly bigger than a Barghest.
"Who is it doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?"
Well personally I'd make the ship more of a fast one. Mercs and pirates alike more often should use lighter faster ships that allow them to be competitive in a fight but seeing how they mostly work alone, a heavy ship would much more easily be beaten by multiple opponents.
But what would be ideal is what Linkus said, two gunboats, one a lighter speedy one, and this one. Don't want to put pressure on you, though, Jinx.
In any case, thanks for doing this, self-employed chars have been crying for such a thing for a long time.

What will stop factions then from getting rid of their own gunboats for those ones? We dont need superuber fast GB unhittable with new bomber guns or snac...
I like the model, but at first glance it looks rather similar to your BHG caps?
As for balance, nobody wants it to be so good that every muchkin in a faction ditches his for one, but I don't think we really have to make them worse than everyone else's either.
Traditionally speaking, mercs use millitary surplus and or converted civillian craft. If you are going to make a free market gunboat it should be far weaker than any of the faction gunboats. Give it average mobillity, light armor, light weapony, large payload, and make it cheap to purchase, comparatively speaking, of course. The only reason a merc company would get a civillian type war ship is because they couldn't afford the real war surplus or didn't have the contacts. This would fit the role play of up and coming merc companies as well as that of established companies that are down on thier luck.
That said, and while I like the model, I don't really see the need for this, and do see how it can hurt role play. Civillian companies are not supposed to be building large millitary craft for anybody but millitaries. The large companies wouldn't purchase them, because thats to much of an expendature, especially when they are already protected by thier security forces and the lawful forces of the areas they operate in. Add that to the fact that there are plenty of other easily accessable gunboats and what you have is a ship that really doesn't logically fit into our universe. It's not that difficult to role play mercs, most are ex-millitary, so have ties to one millitary force or another. That's your gunboat supplier right there. Or maybe they stole it, or purchased it on the black market.

So far its shaping up nicely.Only problem I can see is this. What civilian company produces a large forward gun like the Liberty Gunboat?
None that I know of.
' Wrote:ok - here is a "slightly" modified version of the gunboat...
i removed the front plates - and added large engines - and downscaled the whole thing. - now its more like a 1 person gunboat ( like the orca )
but it looks faster now - something many ppl appear to associate more with a generic GB.
Jinx, I like both of the gunboats.
My opinion? Get both of them in, one with heavy armor and firepower, but low manueverability, the other, lightning fast (figuratively) with low armor and low firepower.
Also, the second model (the one in my quote), I think you could try and simplyfy this one, make it smaller, and wala, you have a VHF or a bomber, would certainly add to the merc/civilian line of ships.
