Well, I stumbled over freelancer while I was rinsing out unnecessary from my hdd, and thought I'd give freelancer another shot.
Finished the campaign shortly after release, sadly tho I didn't have broadband at that time. so I first played online in 2004 or 2005, on one of those "jolt.co.uk" servers, and had great fun for a couple of months.
Later I tried to play some in I guess 2008 on some "void2115" or similar server, not too long this time, maybe a few weeks, but yet it was rather fun.
Now I thought I'd give it a try again. The only RP I have done this far is by taking a class, such as, Pirate, Hunter, Merc and Trader, this was pretty much all the RP there was during the time I played.
After taking some time reading around, I found all these factions RP things, ID stuff etc etc. There's even this "Tech Chart" which I think I got a slight idea of what it means... I still don't get anything about the ID and factions, do you have to post requests and stuff? or can you just write some command to get going?.
So, is there any easy Guide to the RP system, such as a quick overveiw of what factions (what is it? how to join one? is there a difference between NPC and human faction? am I limited to things in a faction?),
ID (how do I get one? what is it for? what does it give me?),
Tech Chart (what does the Top listing mean? "AI Ships and Equipment Blood Dragon Bounty Hunters Guild" etc, what is this request? how do I make a request?),
Classes (what classes are there? what do the classes do? what are their limits?),
PvP (Can I just kill whoever I want(read some rules, but can't see how a freelancer couldn't just go killwhever he wants)? is there any "PK" sign upon killing) and
Bounties (How does this work?)
are? Without going into tons of details, showing huge lists of things or going on a 30 pages marathon with a incomprehensible vocabulary.
There also seems to be rules that cannot be followed such as multi fine a trader, must leave a system upon death and people are not allowed to kill the person (how would they know they aren't allowed to?).
I also fail to find in-game events... I remember you could call a bounty on yourself by paying the ransom and being given the double for surviving on the void2115 server.
Is this server limited to hardcore RP players, or is it available for more casual players (still following rules) playing more for the PvP and possible events?
Oh also, is there no IRC channel?

You only need to post requests if you're gonna have certain ID-technology combinations. Look at the chart.
You can just hop in-game, find a faction that you want your new character to be (or something generic like Freelancer, Merc, etc.), go get the rep for it and buy the ID.

The top row contains a cell for each technology owner. You only need to make a request to a faction leader for a white cell, most will ask you to do it on the forums in-role play.

No, you can only kill someone if it's within your role and the rules.

Someone posts a bounty, then everyone that has the correct ID can go and kill the person to claim it, then post evidence in the thread. Eventually they will recieve the money from it.

Multi fine?
You have to leave system as soon as possible on death in most cases.
You will know you aren't allowed to kill someone depending on what you're playing.

Look at the events board.

Ignore the idiots that fly around saying RP and PvP are two seperate things. That's all I'm gonna say here.

No, Skype is normal around here. All factions, groups etc. that I've come across use it.
We do have a TeamSpeak server.
You can find all the info you need, regarding Factions, Ships, IDs and etc, on the Wiki.
When you want to make a new Character, after deciding which faction to join, you have to buy a Recruit ID(Available in Most - if not all - Bases) and fly to a Base of the Faction you want to join. Then, you have to do Missions from the Bar until your Reputation with that faction is full (9 Blocks Green in your Rep Sheet), That's when you can buy that Faction ID. At this point, you'll become part of the 'NPC Faction'. If you want to join the Official Faction, you have to post an application in their Recruitment Threads and if accepted, you'll become a member of the 'Player Faction'. IDs show Who you are, and what you Can or Cannot do, they also work as your Tractor Beam, but the thing you have to keep in mind is that You Always have to have Only 1 ID on your ship, so, No ID-Less Ships, and No Ships with more than 1 ID on them (Also no transferring IDs between different Ships).
After having full Rep and ID of the Faction you want to join, you can go and buy Ship and Equipment for your Char. Here is where the Tech Chart Comes into play. The different IDs are listed on the Rows, and the Columns list the Techs. So, you have to find the ID you are using from the rows, and continue that row to see which equipment you can or cannot use. You are free to use any equipment from Green Cells, But for White Cells you'll need to ask permission from the Official Faction who owns that certain tech. It's best if you post an inRP Transmission about it on the Comms Channel. Purple Cells mean Guns are Green but Ships are White... And to use any combinations from Red Cells, you'll need an SRP.
Now, after you had set your character up and want to start RPing with it, First of all, you have to keep Server Rules in mind, after that, ID Parameters and General Faction RP-lines. And to define RP in it's simplest form, You have to 'Think' and 'Act' like the Pilot in the Ship, not the Player behind PC. So, no Internet-Talk (Leet Terms like 'lol', 'u' and 'tnx', or Smileys like ':D', ';)' and 'xD') and no OORP (Out of Roleplay) Chat, like telling someone he Pirated you on 'your other Character'. You can use *something* to show emotions and expressions of your chars instead. Like "Hey there! *Waves*", And, as PvP is always an essential part of Roleplay, No one will stop you if you want to play the game because of its fireworks, as long as you Stay within RP Guidelines and Server Rules. Also, Events are always scheduled in This Section, and you can sign in any of the Events you might want to participate If you are allowed to. (For example, some Events are only for members of the Official Factions, but others allow 'Indies' - Members of NPC Faction - as well) And in case you want to start up a Bounty Hunter/Merc Character, you can check the Bounty Board for a job. You'll simply register with a Certain Board (Let's Say: Bretonia Lawful Bounty Board) and when allowed to collect bounties, You'll pick a target, hunt them down, and post screenshot of their ID, and destruction in the Bounty thread. And you'll get paid for the job!
Other than that, As Alex said, not many use IRC around here. Most people are on Skype, and a few on TeamSpeak, so if you want to contact any members of the community, your best bet would be Skype (Also, Official Factions have their own Skype Chat.) And about rules which can't be followed? They might look complicated or confusing at the beginning, but when you got to know how things work around here, You'll see that those Rules are not really hard to follow. (For example; You join a fight in New York System, and after some fighting, you die - And it doesn't matter if you die to your own mine, friendly fire, or even planetdive, a PvP Death is a PvP Death - You'll either spawn in NY, which means you have 10 minutes to leave the System from the fastest possible way and can't return for next 4 hours, Or you respawn in another System - Let's say, California - Then you can't enter New York for the next 4 hours. But the most simple - And preferred - choice is to log out and play on another char for the next 4 hours!)
Also, if You need help or have any more questions, you can always ask in the Tutorial & Support Sub-forum, and also people on This List are always ready to help.
But anyways, Don't worry about all the Rules and stuff, just start playing and you'll get to learn all of them after some time.;)
So, Welcome to Disco and See you in Space when Server comes back Online!
