A pirate sees a transport, stops it, pulls up next to it.
Pirate: "Hand over the plunder, or I blow you to kingdom come!"
Trader: "Oh god no, I have a family, take it all! *Squeals abit*"
Now see, where our piracy doesn't make sense is, it's glorified taxing..
Things to note:
Trader should be afraid for his life, he only has one after all. This is a transport out of hundreds of thousands, that's why the pirates can afford to be ruthless, and how this one robbery doesn't effect head office..
Pirates rob you for all you're worth, or atleast, pirates in history do. They don't admire your cargo, then demand you go to the bank with them and withdraw cash. I know we have the fancy neural-net, but... it's still pretty much more like paying a tax.
Pirates do not settle for second best, they take everything of value and leave.
Pirates are not triggar happy, if the death-threats are to enforce your 'srsbsns' attitude, it's only to show them that you intend to kill them if they don't comply... This is also the traders fault, people cannot RP for fudge in a situation like that.
Our piracy - more like a protection racket.
Seriously, ever notice how our pirates just threaten the safety of the trader, demanding a fee to live?
That is protection money, kinda... And we have the respawn mechanic, which removes the Traders actual losses, and makes it more of a "Oh well.." kinda thing.
I suppose it's one of those things we have that just doesn't make sense....
Though the Sails (Or OPG of the past) that do incite fear, and there is cargo piracy... but you really see how our piracy... kinda sucks?
Not another pirate-bashing thread, just simply pointing out how odd our system is, and how we could possibly play it out differently for a change?

Thats because they suck at pirating.
I take cargo, and I board your ship to take it. If you dont comply i just make place to park my ship in yours by opening your hull.
Also, OPG used to take ONLY cargo for a while (until I could have a talk with most of them), and please don't put us all in the same bunch (pirates not OPG and Sails), because there are those that make piracy - piracy.
Oh, did you want a longer one? Unfortunately, there isn't one. We run into that with bounty hunting as well. The only thing we CAN do is hope that everyone role plays. Unless Matt or the dev team can come up with a grappling hook weapon - where the pirate fires it, it takes all his power to use - but the ship grappled cannot escape.

/would support this if the grapple weapon kept the energy down until the vessel is released, would decrease solo-piracey and hopefully enforce roleplaying to an extent...
The problem is you imagine space pirates as old sea ones.
Game mechanic is good, there is a money piracy and cargo piracy.
If we had something like banks (where trader money is) you would only have true cargo piracy.
Anyway this works too. I think to a trader and pirate it`s easier to take money. Pirates don`t have to sell anything, and trader will easy compensate the lost by selling his cargo.
If you steel for money with "you have 10 sec or you will die" you don`t enjoy pirating you are trying to make profit like traders.
The true pirates on this server most of the time (not always) steal cargo !
I pirate for RP not for profit. And when I see a trader that can return RP, even a bad RP, I let them go for cheap lost.
You know, if we actually didn't have this respawn thing, traders would be much more afraid. I mean, if they'd die, they loose their ship (it's transformed into something smaller...such as starflea). I'd totally be for that. We could have insurance companies then, escorts would be more used, no more silent traders, no more AFKing in space (I'm looking at you reav!!), no more "killz me, iz cheeper" , probably less UAU8 spam, more retreating instead of "pvp? 1v1? kk pew pew" and it would take longer to get to 'endgame' part where you just powertrade so you could buy every capital ship in game. More of it, it would probably discourage lolwuts from lolwutting around.
I mean, those ships are not that expensive to buy a new one after killing.
