This was partially in response to the "smart trading" post. I put this in general because it seemed less intrusive there.
Excuse me because I am a newbie here, but what about smart pirating? I constantly get stopped and the pirate asks for an insane amount of money. At that point it is easier for them to just destroy me, use up all of my batts and bots so they don't get them and let someone pickup my pod. Or the pirate that stops you and waits while the AI takes you out <--- this one really gets me, let me GET somewhere so we can talk without being attacked. I understand that I am susceptible to pirating and don't mind it (it is part of the RP), but it is just nuts when they ask for 4 mil on a 3 mil run. I almost wish it was in the rules that once your cruise gets disrupted on a trade run you are being attacked, though my transport cannot really defend itself anyways. Or (on a non trading rant) the guy who stopped my other character (researcher) and wouldn't let me leave while some Red Hessians destroyed my ship. Then claimed that I attacked him when I was trying to fend off the Hessians with my feeble class 5 weapons (research ship) and accidently fired on his belly not even touching his shield capacity. Maybe it was the Hessians that disrupted my cruise, but it was the player that destroyed the ship. Where is the RP in stopping a neutral player while he holds them there for an enemy to kill? I will admit that my research player has a civillian ID and needs a freelancer ID, but I RPed that very well (on my way to find one).
Please let me know if I have no right to rant, flame suit *ON* :)
It used to be part of the rules. Created too much confusion, so it was removed. Piracy price went up with mining, too, so 4 million is an average price today.
Hmmm, yes I recall you. If I remember correctly you are lvl 70 yes? And you have a civilian ID yes? *coughs*
Hmmm, maybe, the next time a pirate stops you, you could try to do something I like to call role play for, dunno, a few minutes maybe. Then you would be surprised at how low he can drop the price he is demanding. Maybe this is a shock to you but pirates RP too.
So next time try to do that instead of yelling "OMG how could you have cought me with that cruise disruptor from so far away" when a pirate stops you.
But thats just a thought of course.
Tip: Get a trade route that avoids New berlin and New tokyo. (the most pirates are there)
I mostly use jumpholes instead of tradelanes
Tip: if they say: pay 4 million cr.. you say 1 million or i pay nothing.
I think they more like 1 mil that kill you're ship. (that's how i do it)
I got a mining run about 35 million.

Gr
hm.. this is very interesting. with such a behaviour, you would loose all of your cargo, your ship, and your LIFE.
being pirated doesnt leave you too much options, you see. imagine a guy holding a gun to your head telling you to eat that food, you loathe so much.
also, if you were just mining and your hold is filled with ore, the pirate will be better off if he just kills you, waits there for a transport and shares the profit with the transport pilot. being on your place, i wouldnt give him the reason to do so.
at the OP:
listen son, there are lots of players on this server that are good at roleplay , but i often get the feeling that there are more and more idiots here just to shoot people with a big ship. sometimes you just hit into one of those. also .. its a game.. relax.

//Edit: Also, this can come in handy, How to be successfully pirated
At no point was I not RPing when I was talking to you. You had every right to pirate me even though I had a civy ID. MY character, Lee Maddox, is not too much on technology being a trader and all and had been misinformed on the distances a cruise disputer were effective. I knew exactly what you were going to do when you tried to stop me at Denver. My tactical decision did not work because Lee Maddox though a cruise disrupter was limited to 1.5k and my heading was off. There are some new weapons in Discovery and I am learning about all of them the hard way. Besides I never used the disrupters much in Freelancer. Heck, I have NEVER RPed in my life, but I am trying darn hard to make sure I am in character in this game. I was surprised that you let me go and that is why I threw you a small bone of 100k, small YES, but still a bone. Then when I was in New York I picked up the proper ID. Regardless I was above level 30, I had the wrong ID (my fault) you could have STILL pirated me...but I guess you are a nice pirate. Still ticks me off to think that you thought I wasn't RPing that situation. Oh, and I read that entire smart shipping thing. You would be surprised at how much I read, even the ?on planets. Trading gets boring and I usually have another system up with the wiki going while I am playing.
Another pirate stopped me on that same route, asked for 1 mil and guess what...he got a quick deposit. Easy money for him and an acceptable loss for me.
Guys I am not all that upset at the situation. I think I am more upset NOW because Davy.Jones thought I wasn't RPing with him. Right after that I got stopped in Cali at the New York gate and acted like a coward. The pirate wanted 1.5 mil, but it wasn't worth the ship. The thing is, technically when a pirate 'kills' your ship I RP that as I will just "let someone pickup my pod" Just because the ship is destroyed doesn't mean that you are. So No, this is not like having a gun to your head. Pirates should only care about the loot and I have bargained with them but they would rather waste a couple of shield batts and destroy a ship than make an easy million. *except the one that stopped be between Denver and that gate.* I also have a feeling Davy.jones was one of the 'good' pirates. I think getting stopped by Pirates makes the game fun and actually gives me an adrenaline rush. I do not think getting stopped by a pirate who is taking a long time to respond while AI ships fly in and start shooting at you and he keeps holding you there is any fun.
No, what I mean was your first reaction. I dont mind you for running or anything like that, when they run it just makes the situation more fun 'cuz I always catch them at the end.
What I mean by the first reaction is, when you meet a pirate dont go like "Oh dammit another one of these scum. What do you want now" or "olol I R not payin shut me". I let you go 'cuz I could tell your kinda new to this, and even if I didnt let you go, I would charge you like 1 mil max. Its the encounter that matters not the money.
