Kiriko sat looking at her tea, the woman beside her breathing quietly but remaining silent, she bagan to feel a little afraid, she shook her head and looked at her tea, now ice cold the milk had begun to curdle in the centre of the cup.
Kiriko looked up as the big scary man stood hiding the lady from sight, kiri strained her neck a little trying to see what was happening, then she remembered where she was and sat back down quickly, swallowing a little Kiri took one last look at Vixen and shuffled off the edge of her chair and stood up, "g..gomenasai vixen-san!" Kiri shouted kusarian words in a frightened voice, Kiri ran quickly round the counter catching the scary mans daughters' eye accidentally as she left the shop anxiously.
Her hair only just dried a little from the rain was soon wet again as Kiri stood outside in the storm, breathing with short panted breaths she held her baggy uniform to stop it falling down and ran to the Clytemnestra.
Kiriko approached the Hussar "Cly im back, its me, open open!" the fighters front opened up recognising her voice, Kiriko climbed into the ship quickly. "Kya! close Cly its wet.. quick you'll get sick.... close close!" Cly closed the front of the ship, the rain streamed down the window screen as Kiri stared through at the shop front. "Cly, sheilds up.." The Fighter activated the shields and the rain was repelled away from the screen window. "well Cly... I did my best.." she smiled a little and soothed her arm to calm her down.
The Clytemnestra blew jets of hot air onto Kiri as she sat dripping in the pilot seat, Kiri laughed and yelped a little, "kyaa! Cly! .. hyahaha, arigato I am a little wet huh.. ehe", Kiri sat upright and the air currents swirled round her helping her to warm up and also dry her hair and clothing, "hyaha thank you Cly, im all done now" the air jets ceased and Kiri strapped into her seat with a big smile on her face "lets go Cly.. ok?""Cly: ::Roger::" they took off carefully and dissapeared up past the rain and skyscrapers, into the void above..
Sam Foster walks into Christy's with no little trepidation. He's the "new guy", and as such feels out of place somewhat. The place is homely enough, but it's no Sunbucks, as he is used to. The place is moderately busy, and Sam walks to the counter to be served.
"I'd like uhh... coffee as black as you can make it.." he says, scratching the back of his head. He doesn't even know if they serve this stuff here, it did say 'Tea Shoppe' outside, something that made him cringe. "And ummm. A raspberry danish, I guess."
"You're not from around here?" asks a woman who looks to be like Christy.
"No ma'am, I'm from Liberty. Been in Bretonia a year, but still not used to this..."
"Relax a little."
Inside a minute he has a mug of hot, black coffee in one hand and a plate with a raspberry danish in the other. He notices a section which has a few BPA officers in it and he sits there, sipping his coffee.
Leroy Lancelot walks into Christy's. He comes in feeling an outsider, but that doesn't stop him from taking a seat.
After ordering a cup of tea he takes out a bag of 'Sunbucks Fantastic Biscuits.' Immediate, a worker tells him he cant bring outside food.
Leroy then retorts "how do you get away with selling a cup of tea for 2 credits!? more ever you are now trying to sell me these crumpets for 5 credits a bag! why i can go to planet stuggart and get a whole ton of food for the same money!"
After the rant, Leroy bought the biscuits.. "Darn BPA getting free a free lunch here.... At least this place is more lively than the derby bar"
Once the tea arrived, the waitress asked if he wanted milk in it. "no thanks just some sugar please."
Ltcdr Adama sighed he had come to enjoy the quietness not usually enjoyed in Bar. He was about to wander over to Mr Lancelot when he, reminded himself "don't over exercise your leg" he recited to himself. He then smiled as the last exam paper was marked. He quickly got up and thanked Christy and bought a pack of scones. After purchasing the food he dipped into his pockets to take out a small donation and put into the jar with that he left.
Rex Easley wandered through the tall glass door of Christy's looking for a brief respite from his duties as a constable with the Bretonia Police. He suffered more than a little culture shock as the sights, smells and sounds of the small 'Tea and Crumpet' shop pervaded his senses. This was not Sunbucks, he thought. The former LPI officer approched the counter, looking for a small round cake with a hole in the center. Not finding one, Rex decided to immerse himself into his environment. "I'll take a crumpet, please." Might as well find out how good these things really are. The lady at the counter quicly rang it up and presented it to him with a smile.
Rex walked to a stool and sat down. He examined the crumpet carefully. It didn't look horrible, but it was no doughnut. He took a small bite and grimaced. UGH! How bland! What am I to do with this?
After a little thought, he grabbed a small knife and carefully cut the center out of the crumpet. Walking back to the counter, he enquired about some honey and powdered sugar. The lady at the counter shot him a curious look, but eventually gave him the requested items. Rex sat back down, glazed the 'centerless crumpet' with some honey, sprinkled some powdered sugar on it, and then took a bite. "Much better," he said aloud. Maybe this place will do alright. For the first time since he arrived in Bretonia, he almost felt at home.
Junior Constable Higgins entered with Lieutenant Commander Lee Adama both of them cousins, both serving the crown. Junior Constable Higgins order two plates of scones, and two cups of tea one with milk , one with out milk. After handing the tea with out milk to Adama. "So Rod how did your first patrol" Adama enquired.
"good good thank you" Higgins replied sipping the tea.
Several months passed; fairly smoothly too, with the exception of the incident at the Burlington mall and the proceeding incidents regarding a certain terrorist and his ship.
A shop had sprung up in the courtyard under The Hub called 'Caper's Epicurean', the building supplied high end gourmet salads and small meals while maintaining a shop filled with exotic delights ranging from rare infused oils to top quality fusion tea's. The real draw of the shop was its fantastic deserts.
Having realized early on that they couldn't compete against 'Christy's' in the hot beverage market, the shop focused on the things that Christy's establishment didn't provide, such as cold drinks, organic cola's and the like. This unspoken arrangement worked well for everyone involved; Christy could access much higher quality ingredients from her neighbours shop, Mister Caper would direct people to Christy's if they wanted quality tea or coffee and Christy would send her clients to The Epicurean for proper meals.
Not only was the deal beneficial for both companies but it made Commander Silsbury very happy indeed. Her new routine was to leave the Office late, eat at Capers, relax for a time doing work on her PDA, purchase a desert (they changed often which was nice) and head over to Christy's to eat it with a delicious cup of Chai (she was now sure that this fresh batch was not infected in any way shape or form).
She was near the end of her routine on that Friday night, she made a point of cooking at home on weekends (another reason she was happy to have Caper's next door, a sizeable amount of money from her weekly pay packet went on oils and spices etc.) and was making the most of her time on site by having a discussion with the current Chief Commissioner, Duncan McGuire and Inspector Lachlan McArthur.
'She's a Liability!'
'She's the best pilot we have in that area!'
'I'm sure it's not her, she's done something to the ship!'
'Ship or no, she's been worth it hasn't she?'
'I don't know McArthur, having to pay hush money after the incident on the Essex nullifies that worth in my mind.'
They were arguing about Sergeant Kiriko Hidamari, a number of BPA Officers had been suspicious of her since she first applied and those suspicions multiplied when she was seen outside of her ship. On her record it said 'Severe growth disorder', turned out that she had lied on her application and was little more than a girl. The only reason they found out was due to the report of a nurse aboard the Essex. Silsbury had taken the report and ordered the nurse to remove all information about the Officer from the records. Bribes had to be paid to ensure the security of the information.
'Weigh up the advantages; despite her age she, or her ship is one of the best pilots we have; she lives in Omega 49 so theoretically the chances of people finding out about her are small provided she stays in her ship on duty and doesn't come into Headquarters often.' McArthur argued.
'She's a child McArthur! She can't handle this kind of work, and if Child Youth and Family ever found out we would be given absolute hell for employing a minor!' Silsbury countered, unusually riled.
It was at that point that McGuire interrupted, 'McArthur, is she dedicated to this job?'
'Yes sir.'
'And you're sure that she can keep under the radar as far as being a child is concerned.'
'Provided she keeps out of the public eye when not in her ship and we cover with the growth defect argument, yes. Even if she is discovered we could say her background checks raised no flags, well forged or whatever, liability shouldn't stick.'
'Then I dennae see yer problem Commander.' Said Duncan as he leaned back in his chair, 'She stays around Omega-49 most of the time as I've heard and lives at a private residence, besides it could be useful to have an operative in that area, Gran Canaria is a port of call for all sorts, she could feed us all sorts of useful titbits.'
Lucy resigned herself, if the Commissioner had made his decision that was that, she resumed eating her chocolate mousse; it was a little too rich for her liking but not bad.
'Now, I 'ave somethin' important t' say,' McGuire continued.
'I've bin fillin' the gap of Chief Commissioner 'ere now for a while-' McArthur cut him off.
'That's right, why haven't you taken up the position officially?'
'That's jest the thing laddie'¦ I'm not.'
There was a slightly stunned silence from the other two occupants of the table.
'But Sir'¦ we've only just lost one Commissioner!' Silsbury managed.
'It's not fer me lass, what with McNabb leaving, Douglass Retiring and the like'¦ all the ould crew are gone, 'cept fer me.' He sighed slowly.
'I appreciate you two trying to help out, even that rascal Savins tried to settle me in by getting me a pet rock, but I've been in Manchester too long.' He broke off looking distant, 'It's a pretty system ye ken? Quiet too, I don't think I'm cut out fer all the hustle and bustle of running an entire operation from this place.'
He snapped back with a determined look in his eyes.
'I'm goin' back there. I'm retaking my position as Warden o' Newgate.'
'Who have you named as your replacement? Broyles? Kirkham?'
Duncan shook his head, 'They were picked by Palmer, not me, I don't know any of 'em well enough to trust 'em.'
'Who then?' Silsbury asked, she couldn't possibly think of anyone outside of the three deputy commissioners suitable for the job.
'You lass.'
The silence lasted a long time; eventually she managed to say 'why me?'
'I've read your file, didn't you think there was a reason you were promoted so fast?'
It was true; Silsbury had risen in the ranks faster than anyone in recorded BPA history, all due to hard work however.
'You've got somethin' in ya, Palmer saw it, I see it'¦ A real talent for leadership, brilliant organization, and plain hard headedness is probably most important!'
She was stunned, more stunned then she had ever been.
'But'¦ But I was a nuisance to Palmer! All that press, I punched a reporter on live broadcast and there are more incidents than I care to recall that he wasn't happy about.'
Duncan chuckled.
'Sometimes we 'ave to be un'appy about things, otherwise we wouldn't be a law enforcing force, we'd be a law altering force. Palmer saw that you have initiative and that you are willing to stand up for what you think is right. I believe that there isn't anyone else suitable for this job Commander'¦ Did you know you were on the tables for replacing McNabb as New London's Superintendent?'
'What if I refuse the promotion?' she asked faintly.
'Well you're within yer right to, but are you sure you want to? I mean the BPA needs a strong hand to guide it through these tough times.'
She didn't know what to do. She liked the rank of Commander, she got to patrol and go out in the field, she didn't know if she could handle being Chief Commissioner.
'At least take a trial period, like I 'ave.' Duncan said.
'Ok.'
The Warden smiled at her.
'If you'll excuse me Officers, I have a ship to catch.'
And with that, Duncan McGuire, Warden of Newgate, rose from his chair and walked out into the dark night.
The perpetual squall of New London suddenly splashed onto the front screen of the Clytemnestra as Kiriko broke the thick cloud cover and approached the main port of New Londons Megatropolis, she hadn't been to the headquarters since the incident a few months back due to injuries and minor memory loss from combat in the treacherous Dublin gold fields. Kiriko shivered watching the rain bounce from her shield, 'im going to get wet again... mou... why does it always rain here Cly?' kiriko said with discomfort, "Cly: ::I do not yet possess that information, the cause is unknown::". Kiriko watched as the traffic began to become more visible as they closed into the port and came in to land.
Christys Shop was about 40 meters away, there were several Hussar already in the spaces, 'hmm... is that, Silsbury-dono's Hussar? Cly?', the ship circled still moving to its designated landing pad the Clytemnestra scanned the second Hussar on the pad, "Cly: ::affirmative, Commander Silsbury is the vessels registered pilot::" Kiriko looked at the wire frame of the ship on her display as the Clytemnestra set them down gently, "hmm she must be inside, ive never met her in person.. im a little scared..", the display changed, *an image of a thumbs up was displayed for a few seconds*, 'hyaha... arigato.. come on then let's go, i hope the scary lady isn't there today, i don't think she likes me... Cly, b..but it will be ok like you say, so, Ikimasho na?'
Kiriko took her PDA which also contained the 'Cly' 'Testament-v.3' Artificial Intelligence and disconnected it from the Hussar dash, 'Open Cly please' the front of the Hussar jolted before opening up and allowing her to disembark, the cockpit was flooded with cold air and the rain rushed in, 'kya! Lets go quick!' Kiriko carefully climbed down from her fighter and started running for the door to Christys, she spoke to the PDA, 'Close Cly! close close, quick, you'll get sick' from behind she heard the Hussar's front hiss a little and *thunk* closed, then the engines powered themselves down and the craft stood dormant in the rain.
Kiriko reached Christys and opened the door in a hurry to get out of the rain, she shivered as a crash of thunder rumbled in the distance.
Christy turned with a smile as the bell of the shop rang to Kiriko's entrance, looking at the Kusari child infront of her the smile faded in a sudden shock, then remembering Kiriko from before Christy's facial expression resided as if to say 'you again?...' Kiriko helds her arms to her body a little wet from the rain she shivered again, clutching Cly and looking at the scary lady, 'k..konich.. I mean, um..h..hello, Christy-sama...' Christy twitched a little, not impressed at the use of Kusarian in her shop, she turned around. Kiriko made use of her lack of attention and quietly shuffled away looking for a seat. Her AI said it saw Silsbury's Hussar outside, but Kiriko couldn't see the commander in the shop or at any of the tables, she whispered to the miniature 'Cly' in her hands, "are you sure, that was Silsbury-dono's Hussar Cly?..""Cly: ::yes, her registration was on only 1 of the vessels::", thunder rumbled close by the shop, Kiriko nodded a little and shuffled forwards looking for the seat she had last time.
There was nobody in the shop front she recognised, and many gave her frowning and confused looks as she passed them slowly, whispering to each other Kiriko looked at Cly for a moment, a thumbs up was displayed again for a few moments and she let out a small smile and took her place at an empty table.
'At...at least it's nice and warm in here.. Cly.. na? Ehehe'
Silsbury sat with a blank, unreadable expression on her face; her normally intense eyes betrayed no emotion.
McArthur was staring at the curtain that McGuire had swept through on his way out.
He ran a hand through his red hair, 'Well I certainly wasn't expecting that!' he exclaimed 'But he's right though, we've lost all the old supers except for Calvert.'
Lucy recognized a problem that needed immediate fixing and snapped back into reality, 'McArthur'¦ I get the feeling that you don't have much of an interest in field work any longer.' She said taking a sip of Chai and shaking herself slightly.
'Well Ma'am, after the incident at the Mall, I don't feel I'm fit enough to continue patrolling.'
'That and you've accomplished what you joined the BPA for'¦ Haven't you?' She said slowly.
The Inspector hesitated, 'By that you mean I found my sister? Yes'¦'
Silsbury leaned back, 'You've got family on Leeds correct?'
'Yes, bu-'
'And, you'd be quite comfortable returning there?'
'I suppose so, can you stop asking me questions you already know the answer to. Ma'am?' He got the impression that Silsbury was trying to weed out those of the BPA who were reliable and could leave at any moment.
Lucy tutted, 'Anyone would think you weren't interested in being the new Leeds Superintendent!'
Now it was McArthur's turn to be speechless. 'But I'm only an Inspector! Surely one of the Commanders or a Deputy Commissioner'¦?'
'No,' she said bluntly, 'You are best suited to this job.'
She faltered in a rare show of humanity, 'Besides, I need to know someone I trust is in charge over there.'
Trust was not a word bandied around by ex-Commander Silsbury; it was grouped with other unexercised words such as love, friendship and compassion.
'Well, how can I refuse Commissioner Silsbury.' He said a smile creeping across his face.
Khenan.Lawrence walks in half asleep with one eye open no one seems to notice him yet nor does anyone notice Zshan ( Gaian wild life pet) fluttering next to him breathing out wispy clouds of a deep purple smoke out of his two nostrils. So much for a welcoming. He puffed smoke out of his nose forming his words.Yeah....well
He then walks over to a table by a window and sits down.Khenan then makes a loud noise whilst stretching the relaxes. He then noticed Zshan shaking his head and the sudden quietness of the his surroundings.Khenan then realises that all the heads in the room are turned towards him staring.'What?"
