How we respond to others in the game depends on the person we bring to it. I've wondered what had changed within me after playing this game for a couple of years. I found two things.
One was that I could have friendships with people I'd never met. I was new to computer gaming before Disco, and so quite naive. Granted most of the people I use to play with are gone or quite absent. But amidst the space battles and long trade runs, I developed some great friendships with folks I never met that I still value.
The other was I use to be very impatient. That was until I had an Angel character on the server. If nothing doesn't teach you patience and a bit of kindness, then not much will. I think I'm a better person because of flying around in a Starflyer and trying to answer every question you can think of or teaching a new person how to mine.
Having been a faction leader also has it's own unique experiences that forced me to personally adjust, but I'll not go down that road yet.
I was in the mood for a bit of self reflection, and so here we are.
I've learned that people can be real idiots sometimes. And I'm not referring to the lolwuts either, nor the people that swear all the time.
But on the more positive note, Friendships, yeah, definitely, and the whole community atmosphere is a good experience (*good experience*), and I've met some great people.
I've yet to get involved fully in the community (Though I've been playing disco awhile), so I hope more positives can come out of playing here.

I came here because at the time I had an awful PC, and Freelancer was one of the few games I could play, and Discovery didn't tax my system much.
I've learned how to write better and read more stories than I did before, and found a new respect for roleplaying. I guess its improved my literature and helped increase my patience somewhat.
While I barely talk to people personally here, or seriously take part, I do like to help around and take part at times. Hard to get into these days.
The most important thing I've learned in my around three years of Discovery is that you if you can't cling yourself to something, you must let go of it. But if you still do, it won't make anything better, maybe even worse.
Have I changed? Definitely. I've matured a lot in these three years and Discovery (or rather, what it used to be) helped me greatly.
Thanks, everyone.
In all seriousness though, yeah, I did. There were two aspects in my life that attributed to me actually developing socially. One of those was Discovery.
..Come to think of it, I used to be a pretty calm guy before I joined this thing.

You should be realy happy that it only took a computer-game to realize that.
I was inspired to learn Photoshop and 3d stuffs by Disco. It did worth every hours spent with silent smuggling.
I almost also said that it improved my English but considering what people might read that, I swallowed that sentence. But it made me forgot how to type on my native-language. Most of my friends now forced to english if they want to chat with me. :-]
Roleplay and calmness? No I had them packed when I got here.
