There is a dynamic econony that updates every time you dock on a base, rather that updating in real time. At least, there was, not sure if that's still a part of things.
A dynamic economy updating in real time is not an economic use of server resources. With the amount of different commodities and bases we have, the amount of data needing to be updated simultaneously is too great to be done constantly. And for little gain.
I have a suggestion which I think that it would be really useful.
When you are a pirate staying near a trade lane waiting for a trader, your radar (bottom-left panel) has many red targets. The lanes, NPCs, Weapon Platforms, planets etc. Sometimes when a trader tries to go through the lane, you don't see him because the radar is already full. So you have to scroll down before you shoot the lane and then it might be too late. How about making the radar ALWAYS show all the other players on top and the other things below them? That way you won't be afraid of missing a trader.
Making the lanes and gates neutral faction would get them out of your radar already.
And I strongly suggest you either make all lanes and gates neutral faction in 4.86, or you make them not let hostile ships dock.
The way it is now is just nonsense, and their guns dont even do relevant damage, so whats the point in making them shoot anyway?

This will help the situation but not totally. Some trade lanes (e.g Texas system. Lane between New York Jump gate and planet Houston) have weapon platforms near them so there are more red targets on the radar so you might still need to scroll down.
I agree with making the Lanes and Jump Gates Neutral faction but if they are not made, I don't think it's a good idea to make them undockable to hostile ships because it would be very annoying going through a big system (like Stuttgard) without lanes. It wouldn't be good in RP but still...
I've got a suggestion that has high likely been mentioned somewhere else before. Even though the Search option did not showed any topic concerning this subject.
The basic regular player is doing well on funds. Only people who just start playing here might be low on funds but besides them everyone is doing quite well on the money. Thing now is that people have no idea where to spend it on, it usually goes to capital ships nowadays.
I myself got the exact same problem, getting money but not having things to spend it on.
To get things interesting again, how about charging a death penalty. Based on your level a certain amount of your money will be removed each time you die. This should make people care more about dieing, and there's something your money goes to now.
It does have two downsides; Connecticut in which people openly PvP each other, I'm sure they aren't looking forward to loose a ton on money on it. And the fact that people can just put all their money on another account, and use a server command to fund themselves on their main character.
I propose that capital ships cannot dock on station/base except on shipyards and planets. I think it make sense because these ships are really big and should need special docking installations.

Kind of adding a bit more headache into the game right?
Also, every other thread about this has shot it down.

Thoughts?
This can be done. It *already* exists anyway, in another mod. 88 Flak. There, Alaska is the PvP system, there is no DP there. But everywhere else there is. This goes from 100,000 credits for fighters to 7,000,000 credits for large caps. The ship prices are different, though. And in my opinion it works very well, because you really fear dieing if you dont have enough credits to pay DP, if you cant it takes your weapons/ammo/shield/thruster/radar/etc. Its a pain when you got plenty of rares.
Hmm, can missile trails (both launchers and turrets on ships) last longer? Would certainly look pretty cool.
Also can NPCs be made to appear at a further distance? It's just ridiculous that your shield drops for no reason and you can't shoot at the enemy until it appears in 2.5k.
And also...any chance of decreasing the price on nanobots and shield batteries?
Not enough bomber cannons on the Virage? There you go.
