I need some information for something I am working on.
My questions are what are the negative effects of cardamine addiction?
What are the positive effects of cardamine addiction?
How long until cardamine is needed to live?
Negative side effects are obviously the permanent addiction to it, and it's altering of your whole body. It also affects fertility, slowing sperm or killing eggs or something.
Someone born to a mother or father on Cardamine has enough in their DNA to be addicted to it for life aswell.
Positive side effects are things such as, the calmer sense of mind, better reactions etc. Outcasts have some of the finer minds in Sirius because Cardamine helps stimulate their brains or something, and then there's the obvious side-effect of it doubling your lifespan (or more in some cases).
It's known that the oldest living humans in the Sirius sector are Outcasts.
As for addiction? I think it's a little bit like Cocaine, with small amounts, very diluted, there is enough of a high to enjoy it recreationally, but 98% of the time, that leads to permanent addiction, and a serious problem.
Space junkies.
Cardamine taken in it's pure form, of even refined slightly is enough to get someone addicted for life. It think it's based on how long it takes for the body's DNA to alter, so that without Cardamine, it goes into shock.
Any time before then, and the person just have to possess the willpower to not touch it again.
Calmer state of mind? I'd argue that the cardamine infocard says exactly the opposite.
I believe that "intense" and "euphoria" are pretty close to each other.

Nowhere does vanilla say how long it took for the hispanians who landed on Malta to discover that they needed it to survive. Just, when they started exploring, they experienced wierd side-effects which got more intense the longer that they stayed away.
I'd actually argue that it's far more likely to take at least a few years of use, ie long term use, to become physically addicted (obviously the psychological aspect is much quicker).
And contrary to what some of the less than able individuals in disco would state, advanced stages of Cardamine mutation does NOT grant the "rush" of the earlier stages, which means that any claims akin to "They're high constantly" is bogus.
Not a calmer state of mind, but a sharper one. Cardamine doesn't actually increase their brains effectiveness. What it does is contribute to two very relevant factors in factoring intelligence;
Sharpness of mind, the ability to problem-solve and think logically, is increased. Since those are the two most important mental characteristics in a person's ability to learn and comprehend, it contributes heavily.
Lifespan. As Outcasts have much longer lives, they have more time to devote to research, learning, and training. This increases the average level of knowledge and intelligence within the Outcasts, and also allows for more research and invention by the most brightest minds, allowing them to get more out of them than other ethnic groups, as they spend a relatively shorter span of their life in learning, and more in experimenting.
EDIT: And what Jameson said, after the first few years of Cardamine use, the rush and high of the drug is no longer in effect. As the body takes it continuously and adapts to it, it nullifies the euphoria effect. Those born on Malta or to Cardamine-addicted parents are likely not to experience the euphoric feeling at all, and if they do, it'll be during their infant lives, and thus not a factor.

This is what I meant Connor, the calmer state of mind and such comes to seasoned Outcasts, not newbies who take it for the high.

"Seasoned Outcasts" being the pure-blooded Maltese whose addictions stretched back throughout several centuries in their family tree... One could argue that it depends on the subject at hand though, since I like to think that the "success" of a first-generation Cardamine addiction also depends on the hosts genes.
