I haven't played 5, but I've heard good things. I really enjoy 4, and I think that if you enjoy managing empires and winning cultural victories, Civs 4 might be your thing with religions and corporations. If you enjoy more combat, though, Civs 5 changed to a more strategic, Quasi Advance Wars style of combat, rather than the unit stacking of old, so that might be better. Personally, I like empires, so I resigned myself to buying 5 when it get way cheaper or there's an awesome Steam sale, so I suppose that's the difference.

4 if you ask me. Played both. When you use the unit stacking in 4 and then they brutally take that away in 5, meh. Oh and hexagons, never been a fan of them either.
