Since I am using an old 600MHz notebook for browsing as well as for Skype I came up with the same problem.
What I found and am currently using is K-Meleon. It is open and runs on Gecko-engine, is reliable and uses hardly any resources. I don't know if it can show flash, but there is a plugin-symbol shown where flash-stuff would be on a page, so I guess there is a plugin available as well.
Neat little browser, I must say. Has no backdoors to your system for sharky companies with colored letters either.

Funny thing to say by someone with your name:laugh:
@Anon: You could have a second try on Firefox as well. I use Firefox with AdBlockPlus, which will keep your internet-experience pretty fast. You can choose by general filtering rules and by exact definition. In fact on my system is so much filtered out of a page that certain sites aren't even usable any more for me. That's why I use K-Meleon on my main machine as well as a second browser.

Obviously Opera. Fast and smooth and doesn't really need you to install addons because it has most of that functionality out of the box. Still has an addons option though just in case.

Google Chrome ftw.
It's made from awesomesauce (scripted version).
However, there are some good alternatives too. Opera, for example.
I used Mozilla as my default web browser many time ago, however, I realized it's laggy and have tons of unneeded crap which uses needed resources. Chrome is good for in-browser applications.
