I stopped off in New Berlin to sell some gold and the equipment dealer attempted to sell me a "Sg-ts Transport Graviton Shield" for my Turanic Freighter.
Now there is no question that the 70,000 shield capacity of that shield is preferable to the 10,000 that I am getting from my Barrier Shield, and the "Transport Shield" seems to be mountable on my freighter.
My question is: are the Transport Shields of that type that are available on New Berlin permitted in terms of RP to be mounted on any ship that can structurally mount and use them (excluding the Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers etc that)?
I am not talking about an RP restriction due to one faction being hostile to another so you can't use a hostile faction's weapons and equipment. I am wondering if perhaps they are supposed to be RP restricted to these big Transports that all of you traders out there seem to prefer. Or is every freighter class ship permitted to use them?

I may be wrong, but I would mount any transport class shield I could on any freighter class ship. A trader makes a living by keeping the ship in good operating condition. Sometimes the more profitable routes take us through enemy territory, therfore having the best shield available would seem to be the correct RP choice.
You're perfectly within RP to mount that bad boy on your freighter. If you're not comfortable buying it in Rheinland, there are plenty of other House planets and the odd Independent Freeport and Planet where they're sold as well.
There are actually two ships at present that will mount a lvl 8 transport shield (gunboat class), but I think that silliness will be changed in the next Mod.

Thanks for the response.
I am not the type who believes in the adage "it is easier to get forgiveness than permission", so those of you who read this, please keep weighing in.

it changes the rules.
so.....be careful.
Could you provide a link to what you are referring to?
I think I understand that mounting a gunboat shield on a freighter would mean that the freighter should then be RP'd as a gunboat.
I don't really understand the difference it would make to mount a transport shield on a freighter.
Specifically, what "rules" would be changed by mounting a transport shield on a Turanic Freighter?

I run a transport shield on my Camara... Neutral ID'd freighter. I ran a transport shield on my Turanic Freighter configured as a convoy raider. Both of these configs I ran for quite a while and never had a complaint from anyone that I was turning my Freighters into Transports by doing so.
Edit: Fact of the matter is, freighter shields suck. If you want to RP as a small freighter running drugs or guns or something illicit, you look for a freighter that can use a Transport shield. If freighter shields are changed so that they scale up nicely (top freghter shield should be close to the low end transport shield IMO), then it becomes reasonable to expect people to use Freighter shields. With a (unspoken?) rule like "equipping a transport shield means you are now a transport" you are forced to choose either RP or functionality, and that isn't a good thing for the mod or the players.
In addition, the turanic raiders freighter with a transport shield can barely be used to hijack players in trade ships, the only thing keeping it in the fight is that shield. On the other hand the Kushan freighter wears at most a freighter shield. This results in a ship too fragile for the task, even though it is well gunned and maneuverable.
Some simple changes like making freighter shields better at the high end, improving the Camara's turn rate, and adding cruise disruptors to the Turanic and Kushan freighters would go a long way toward improving the usefulness of these ships as more than RP also-rans. Players constantly must make RP vs Functionality decisions on their ships, would be nice to improve functionality rather than make rules to further marginalize border-line useful ships.

see...people other than traders can use freighters,
but a freighter, or csv or whatever with a transport sheild, is a transport.
now, someone is gonna stab me because of my GC transports....and, let me remind you...because of that I'd, I am completely open to attack...you need not warn nor demand money.
most people treat juno as a trader, which is polite of them, but she is of course a GC, and GC rules apply.
