Although my ping in the server-list shows up as 60ms, I experienced bad ping of 500 or so ingame, in combination with heavy lag (40%) and loss (10-20%).
The bad connection did not constantly have the same values, but was somehow rather wavy than spiky. It generally made the game unplayable for me for two years or so.
Using WinMTR only proved that the problem must be somewhere in my system, but I never found out what was wrong. I play with an old, but clean XP-machine of a 3GHz single-core and 2GM RAM with nothing else running in the background than what is necessary.
Now I've accidentally come up with a solution to this problem: I start up Freelancer just as I normally do and connect to Discovery-server. Then I tab back to desktop, start the taskmanager and reduce freelancer.exe's priority to subnormal.
It's important to do this after connecting to Disco-server, otherwise my machine locks up.
After doing this I have no lag at all, no loss and an ingame-ping of 60ms. Also the game runs fluently and doesn't stutter.
I have no idea why this is, but I'm glad to have found a solution that works for me.
And maybe sharing this is also helpful to others who possibly experience the same problem.
Cheers, Zeb
