LIBERTY NAVY PATROL REPORT
Ensign Darren Barnes
DEPARTMENT RECEIVING: LIBERTY NAVY PATROL ARCHIVE
-- Begin Report --
Below details the patrol report as logged by ENS. D BARNES as part of a scheduled patrol of the Texas / New York sectors.
After the destruction of my Avenger-class bomber, running through the routine medical checks after a ship ejection sequence and the seemingly endless paperwork, I was back in action once again. However, I knew some changes had to be made in order to learn from these experiences and ensure I was more prepared for the next time trouble came into our sector. My standing orders were to report to the LNS Arkansas in the Texas system, not too far from my original base at Chadwick Station. What seemed like a routine trip soon turned out to be a much more exciting one. Upon arrival, I was instructed to speak with the commanding officer and discuss a pre-flight brief and patrol route, it was to be a standard route around Texas and New York space, with a brief stop at the California Gate to run the usual cargo scans and ID checks.
I accepted these orders without question, but I made my concerns about the Avenger-class bomber and it's suitability for my current role known. It was no secret to anyone, the C/O included, that I had many years experience with the BDR-337 "Executioner" class Heavy Fighter, before being upgraded to the BDR-845 "Avenger" when that eventually became the Navy's premier heavy fighter. I explained these concerns, and whilst I had predicted a refusal, the C/O was sympathetic to my cause and agreed that it wasn't an ideal situation. Before I could ask for further details, I was offered a partially-rebuilt Avenger that was repaired after a collision due to a Cadet completely fumbling his docking procedure with a Navy Battleship. It was in working condition with only the mismatched paintwork of the replacement wing giving any indication it wasn't fresh off the production line.
Naturally I was satisfied with this compromise. I got into the replacement fighter and it felt just like the old days, with the new avionics and upgraded systems, of course. This swap had slightly delayed my patrol start, so I needed to make up for lost time. I quickly verified we had enough fuel and weaponry, and departed the battleship for the start of the Texas leg of the patrol. Expecting the usual traffic, instead I encountered very little, so this part of the patrol was mostly unremarkable, therefore I began leg two of the patrol, straight through to Norfolk, then the usual round trip past Fort Bush, Planet Manhattan, West Point, and so on. This also lead to two waypoints contained within the Badlands, a scary though for most cadets but not one I was unfamiliar with. Even this proved to be quiet and no major incidents took place.
On the return to Fort Bush, encountered some Interspace vessel that at first I thought would be part of a shipping convoy yet turned out to be a solo pilot in a Starflier, seemingly on a repositioning flight to get to his larger vessel, routine communication and checks were performed and nothing untoward turned up. Finally, a check of the California gate sector was performed and routine traffic scanning took place without any substantial contraband found. I was hitting the end of the assigned patrol at this point, so entered the waypoints to get back to battleship Arkansas for routine debriefing.
