Keyword: Capital.
Scumbag brought a very good and interesting point in my thread about escorts.

The man speaks the truth, listen.

There is a reason why the armor upgrade is called a CAP 8, because it belongs on a capital ship. Transports should only be allowed to mount heavy armor upgrades.
Quote:Heavy Armor Upgrade Mk IV
Armor upgrades specially developed for transports and light capital ships are cheaper and offer more protection than the universal upgrades of similar class, but occupy more cargo space. The Mk IV upgrade is more or less the standard issue armor for many heavy transports and gunships built today. Great value for your credits. Multiplies base armor by 3.0; occupies 170 cargo space.

So the question is, should civilian and corporate transports be mounting military grade equipment?

Actually, thinking about things, this might not be such a fair question. I might get heavily biased towards the opinion of the people we call power traders. Power trades will want to keep their armour upgrades, so they can plow through any encounter with minor risk.

Of course. No ship is limited in what they can mount. Some fluff text in some infocard does not say what can be done and what cannot be done.

Power traders do not fly with CAU armor.
They fly with NO armor or UAU8 because the others take quite a bit of cargo.

And this suggestion is - in my opinion - simply stupid.

I fly (among other things) a Bison with CAU6 armor. Yup, I can walk through the bot-storms around jump gates with relative impunity, but even a half-assed bomber pilot can still beat me down if they catch me far enough from a dock.

I'm not a "power trader" by any means, but I'm still saving up for some ships I want. Turn that into 6 months worth of trading instead of 6 weeks and I'll be sorely tempted to leave. (And, no, I'm not saving up for some monster cap.)

Would the British army allow top grade tank armour plates to be mmounted onto a bus?
Thinking about this, perhaps just law enforcement IDs should be allowed to mount cap armour upgrades on transports, the would make for some RP sense.

Are privately owned money transports of banks armed with bullet proof glass and thick armor plates that are "military grade"? For sure they are.

Nope.

Seriously though, this is a battle between opinions, we can't reach agreement, i would be surprised if we did.

Exactly well said. If you actually RP correctly why you have it I think it makes sense.
To be honest though power traders wouldn't really buy it because of the cargo space it takes, no?

The definition of "power trader" implies that he has no armor bigger than UAU8. Ye. Smile
