A lot of people ask me this question, teach me, show me , etc, etc. The more I try to answer this question the more I understand that you can't teach someone to design.
If you need to learn photoshop, there are a lot of tutorials available, just use:
This part is easy. Easy as in getting familiar yourself with photoshop. What I can not teach you is to have a taste or inner vision of what will look good. Computer is just a machine, which does whatever you tell it to do.
I would recommend making a sketch of what you want to make before you do it in photoshop. I don't mean like a good drawing, but make a rectangle, indicate parts of the signature you want to make. A ship is going to be here and going upper right corner, then the background will drop a show there, text is going here...etc, etc.
The next step is to get the right materials, such as brushes, fonts, renders, etc. You have to have a mental image of what you are making before you even open photoshop. You can imagine a ship, let's say Osiris flying in the cloudy nebula. So, you go and search for nebuli that you like and you get some cloud brushes. Make a render of Osiris.
-- Now you work on the BG first. Combine images, erase, overlay, use brushes, whatever you think is needed to make a good background.
-- Now place your ship where you want it, but don't make it centered, too boring and too expected, use the rule of thirds at least, use perspective, make it "unusual to look at" but not to hard to comprehend/understand.
-- When Osiris is placed, work on it, blend it into the background.
-- Add some text, place is where you like and chose the appropriate font.
-- Now that you have everything in place work on the signature little by little to blend everything together, add layers, eras some parts, add effects. Basically you are dressing the image up.
After a while you will get an eye on what looks good and what doesn't. You can look at something you like and try to imitate it, but don't blindly copy it, instead you take the parts that you like and add something from yourself. This is how you develop your own style.
I do this for 10+ yaers on and off and my art was not always good. I started with basics and educated myself further. You can't just say: Oh, I will do this and BAM...it comes out all good looking.
I remember seeing images that I really liked and I wanted to make something similar. I experimented, tried different techniques, watched a lot of tutorials, did a lot of trial and error images and little by little I got better.
Just don't give up.
