Ok, what I really believe is that no restrictions like this work unless they are forced by in-game shield levels. Those who visit this forum will know and may obey those restrictions, those who don't visit will never know.
What I'm intended to do for next version is make Battleship and Cruiser shields level 10, all others level 9, and no more questions. You won't be able to mount cruiser shield on anything less than a cruiser. Battleship shields will be mountable only for battleships and cruisers. However, more level 9 shields may be added that players will be able to buy for gunboats and transports.
As for liner and prison ship, I don't know... I personally think that they are both cruisers, and should be able to mount battleship shields. Not many people fly those ships anyway, and their usage in combat is limited. So a stronger shield might come in handy.
If I'll have good reason, I'll downgrade liners too, but that's... for further discussion.
We could always ask how the maker of evolution made his turret slots. Evo has a Gunboat weaps/shield as its slot, not an actual numbered slot. The cruiser has a cruiser weaps/shield slot, etc... It seems to me that allowing BS shields on cruisers and destroyers would make the battleships worthless. Once a cruiser has its shield it can die easily. The cruiser is so much smaller than the battleship has a harder time hitting it while the cruiser has no problem at all hitting this big target. I still think that shields should have their own number. Battleships - lvl 10, cruisers - lvl 9, gunboats - lvl 8, liners (in between transports and gunboats or gunboats and cruisers) - lvl 7, transports lvl 6.
This way everything wil remain balanced. There won't be a problem of watching for people who add shields where they shouldn't be.
Personally I found BS shields on cruisers retarded. It wasn't meant as a cruiser shield. It was meant as a BS shield for the BS only. As I said before, after you allow BS shields on a cruiser there just is no point to battleships. Heck I would scrape mine because it would have no purpose. It would just be one big target for a cruiser or destroyer.
I agree with Igiss statement.
And no, a cruiser cannot evade BS fire because it is not fast enough to dodge the shoots.
I have a BS shield on my Cruiser (The defender) since septenber '05, and i have fought very many battles with that ship. I can guarantee that taking down a bs is not that easy because the BS has more weps, power output and way more hull than the cruiser. The only way i was able to take down a BS was by targeting it with the dual forward guns i had, but thats not easy due to weps range, let alone power usage of 2 forward guns.
Also, if the BS go to full impulse it can hit me and avoid some shoots of the forward guns in the process.
I vote BS <-> cruiser shields interchangeable between the classes.
The level thing is an exellent idea because it will stop people from mounting BS shields in gunboats and lesser capital ships.
The liner and prison ship can use the BS shields as they need a good defense to compensate the lack of offensive firepower.

(Really, I speak terrible English, so please, tell me if I make mistakes. I'd like to improve it a bit )
I just think that the BS shield is just for the BS the Cruiser shield ONLY for the cruiser. The Gunboat shield only for Gunboats... Its logical that a Gunboat would have a Gunboat shield. A Battleship is the biggest of the lot. MUCH easier to hit then a gunboat. So i also think battleship shields only for battleship. I havnt tried a cruiser or a liner yet so i don't really think i have much say there...
I just want the biggest shield on my Liner I can get... Its NEVER EVER going out to PvP. Its my storage. ;)
Which means I am in favor of the cruiser/battleship shield interchanging. No, not for that reason alone. Cruiser is majorly outpowered by a battleship...
Liners - I tend to say Liner shield but feel that someone's gonna send a hitman to my doorstep (OFFTOPIC****www.hitman.com**** if you need to comment on this start a thread in flood)
Dab's idea is good I've seen that in Evolutions too.
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
GUYS Nightfall is right. A cruiser should NOT be allowed a BS shield.
Also until i see a liner come into the local harbor with foot-thick armor plating and Guns with barrels the size of my head sticking out the portholes it, IMO, should NOT be a cruiser class-ship.
Luxury liners already have a rediculous power generator that could light up manhattan for a year so i dont see why it should get a Cruiser shield too.

Give me a computer and i wil sort that out! Ha! it wont be able to suport it for a DAY with me there! .
If a Liner has a Battleship shield it would be a transport AND a battleworthy ship. It should be one or the other not both... It can fit BS weaps AND fire them. As for the Cruiser thing... A Cruiser is more manuverable and smaller then a Battleship. No matter which one. Yea? Thats why the cruiser has a smaller shield. Whats the point in making its own shield if it can legaly use a better one?
