Had this idea a while back, figured it would be awful and dismissed it. If you're reading this, then like an idiot I decided to post it. Keep in mind this ain't flood
A lot of people here seem to be of the mindset the dev team has no idea what it's doing, and the admins are all idiots. So I come with a proposal, change places for a week. You think you can do better than the devs? Prove it. For one week, chosen members of the community are to be given all the tools the dev's use, as well as a list of things that need to be fixed and/or implemented.
However, this does not come without consequences. At the end of the trial week, if noticeable changes are not seen for the better, you forfeit everything across all accounts. Money, ships, guns, the entire lot. Now, you might scream "That isn't fair!" or "Punishment is too high", I say it'll help you remember the next time you decide to hurl abuse at the people who keep this place running. They do a stressful job, for free, to give this community somewhere to play. Something to do.
If you manage to make something better, you'll get to name a system or something, I don't know. Dev's can think of something for that.
I had an idea for something like this with the admins position as well, but scrapped it entirely because frankly, some people just can't be trusted with that and a week without admins who know how things work would be a train wreck.
There's my proposal. Is it awful? I think so. Will it happen? Probably not.
I don't think the admins are idiots. They do a pretty good job.
The devs are a bit disorganized though. That's a common fact among both the community and even some of the Devs know it.
Plus, doing things like ignoring feedback and sneakily implementing things that no one (sometimes not even the other devs) know about isn't good either.
Back on topic,
I don't see the point really. Admins are doing a good job, the problem with them is that they're humans; they're busy. They can't be everywhere.
And it's unlikely the dev team will get subbed too.
That comment was a generalization, I know not everyone has that opinion of them and in fact, my opinion of the Admins and Devs is quite high. This thread is a proposal to see how people respond. They love to throw abuse and bile at the people that run this place, so let's turn the tables. You do their job, you see what it's like to have to work with an engine thats stretched to it's limits, while a community throws rocks at you for not doing it "right". Also, when I use the term you, another generalization, not directly pointed at anyone in specific, and I forgot the Admin idea as soon as I came up with it because they do a damn good job as is, and any type of role reversal on that end would just cause headaches for everyone involved.
I don't think sucking up like this will get you bigger odds in the next admin/moderator choice competition, but then again it is your own right to try....
While usually made in good faith, such schemes are rarely necessary and the "calm yo tits" threads rarely achieve much either. People just need to not behave like idiots. It's really that simple.
@ Mister_X
I do not see this post as a suck up, I see it as a Personal statement and is a example of somebodies values and I kudos Tonto for being brave enough to put his personal values up on a website where (chances are) it will be slandered, insulted, and torn up. Personally, I have opinions about this topic, I choose not to put it into the Lion's Den because I know I personally do not have tolerance for that kind of thing.
Now onto the Original Post:
Tonto, I really do see where your coming from really I do. Though I would enjoy seeing some people in this community stripped of their Troll Play Toys. And people who do nothing but lob insults from the stands, instead of standing up and running into The Colosseum Pit that is the Discovery Admins/Dev Playground(I will clarify this in a few lines) and trying to help the show not suck they just sit there a rip on it and make it suck more for those who are trying to enjoy it. I do not think that it would work simply because i feel that there would be at least one member of the community that would do this, fail, and then go al psycho-path and begin a "Come hell or high water" campaign to take down Disco because his toys (that he could probably power trade to get back in less than a week) are gone gone gone. However assuming everyone here is (mostly) mentally stable I think the likely scenario would be rage quitting followed by him Q_Q'ing on the forums for a few months till either A: Admin/Devs return the ships or B: He gives up and moves on. Trust me when I say that I wish this could work, but I just don't think I would.
Why do I say "The Colosseum Pit that is the Discovery Admins/Dev Playground"
In the days of Ancient Rome, The Colosseum was a magnificent place, a place to go and watch The Arts, Trials, and Gladiator fights. It was one of the first what I would call to as large scale public recreational and entertainment hubs. I liken it to a Mall or hell an Internet Forum. There were Men Women and Children of all ages. All gathered to enjoy a Play, or a Mock Battle. Now in Rome, they had a thing called Gladiatorial Combat, which pitted a Gladiator against some challenge, be it a wild animal or another Gladiator. Now to this forum, every day we the people who enjoy playing Discovery log into the Forums, we see what people are saying, and acknowledge it in some form albeit it looking at it or replying to posts, but then, on occasion a marvelous spectacle is announced "Attention patrons! If you will gather into the arena a Admin is about to be set out against a Challenge!!!" ( an Admin/Dev makes a post on the forums) we swarm the thread read it over, and then are taken in shock, that this is happening and begins hurling insults, we dislike what is about to happen because "It will suck" or it will be "The End of Disco". So before the fight even starts ( IE: Coding/Implementing/Preparing) the community is shooting it down. So not only does the person have to deal with the challenges faced in the arena(modding) they now have to endure distractions that could side-track them. Then, when the plan flops because the Admin Dev has lost total faith and has said "Screw it", the community uses it as fuel to say "We told you so".
How does all of that ^^^^ relate to the original post?
It’s simple really, you want a better show? Make suggestions, do something. Not "ShipX is broke Fix Noa Plz" Say something like "Hey I have found ship X has Z problem, maybe you could do A,B, or C. It may fix the problem." if you’re not a Modeler. If you are, all the better do something like "Ship X is broken here is what I have considered could be done ( Insert Technical Ship Modeling words here)" Saying stuff like "Fix Nao" Doesn't help any one's situation at all it does is make it clear something is broken but if Devs do not know what is broken then they cannot fix it.
We just have to realise there's always gonna be people who will rage every time something isn't to their liking....
I personally don't do any of that, raging or all out praising of the admin and dev teams...
Do they have to work hard here without any reward? Yes..
Are they perfect and never make mistakes? No, definetly not....
The point is, the devs and admins should have more interaction with the players. They should be more available and opened for suggestions. And players should be more reasonable and patient, but this balance can never really be achieved. As.I said, people will always cry and rage, and both devs and admins should know what they are getting into when they volounteer for the job, and before taking it, think really hard if they can really put up with it...
TL;DR version: Players will never be perfect, the admin/dev team will never be perfect...
