James entered his quarters a little after 8 a.m. dressed in a full tuxedo, he went to his bathroom and splashed water on his face as he undid the bowtie and jacket. He walked to his bed and collapsed into it while sighing contently. The Grand Banquets were the worst, usually starting 10 and not ending until 6 or so in the morning, this one however had dragged on to almost 7:30 before James finally signaled attendants to start to lure the guests elsewhere about the ship. His neural net pinged him.
He called out loudly to the room with a stern voice "No!". The neural net pinged him again. The ships A.I. nicknamed Apollo was a godsend for the Captain, but also a curse. The A.I. was supplied by OSC, and programmed to make the guests as happy as possible, sometimes at the expense of the crew. The A.I.'s voice filled the room as it overrode his command. "Captain, you are requested on the bridge."
James grumbled, "I'll be in soon."
It was shortly after 10:00 when He approached the bridge bulkhead. His assistant and Guest Services Manager Jane exited before he could get to the door looking frazzled, "I swear to god one of these days I'm going to rip that bloody A.I. outta the wall and eject him into space. Come with me there is a customer issue I need you to smooth over."
As they turned and walked into the center of the ship Jane filled him in. "Mr and Mrs. Johnson, frequent fliers, last cruise they spoke to you about taking a trip to the Hawaii for a few weeks. Speaking of," she checked her watch, "We are five minutes from the end of the play and about 18 hours from the Hawaii. They originally booked an Egyptian Suite but we had a coupling fail about an hour ago and we can't let them stay in a dark hole, I've bumped them up to a Babylonian Suit and have moved their luggage already. Oh, their anniversary is in 5 days according to their paperwork." They turned a corner and stopped next to an exit, Jane checked her watch again, "they will be here shortly" James Nodded as the doors opened
"Mr. Johnson, how do you do, and the lovely Mrs. Johnson looking pretty as ever. I know your anniversary is coming up and when I heard you where flying with us again I took it upon myself to see to it personally that you were transferred into one of our finest Babylonian Suites." He paused for a moment before gesturing to Jane, "This is my personal assistant, Jane, she will take you directly to your new suite."
With some more smiles and handshakes the guests were soon off to their new suite and James was headed to the bridge. When he entered his Executive Officer approached him with a datapad. "Good Morning Adam." "Good Morning Sir, here are the reports from our daily operations conference." "Anything I need to be aware of?" "We are running though our luxury food supply at an unusually high rate, I've already called in a resupply"
James nodded and took a seat in the Captains Chair, "Helm, status"
The Atlantis continued to glide through the blue nebula
James was uncomfortable, it wasn't the hostile Rhinelanders, he had dealt with far more snotty V.I.P's. It was the traffic. He approached his comm officer and leaned in, "What do you hear out there?" "What I gather is there was a major attack in Omega 7, the Rheinwehr shut down the gate, traffic is all sorts of backed up" "What number are we?" "Baden Control hasn't..." the officer paused for a moment while he listened, "Number 9 for moor." James frowned and checked his watch. "Make it number 4." It was his comm officers' turn to frown.
He turned his back and walked to the center of the bridge, as he approached the navigation platform Apollo activated the holo array. James leaned on the table and looked at the system schematic. "Tie our radar into the schematic and show me local traffic." Apollo responded to his command. The nav map pinged as several dozen red markers flashed around in a roughly spherical shape from the point where his ship was above Baden Baden.
"Lets see, 5 super transports, 3 liners, 4 or so yachts, a dozen freighters..." he muttered to himself as he counted the various dots and their classifications. The comm officer approached him "Sir, we are number 4 for landing now and the moor point is ready and waiting." "Excellent work" James responded as he patted him on the back before turning to the front of the bridge. "Helm make ready to dock starboard airlock five."
The bridge up till this moment had been at its usual activity level, but once the order left the Captains mouth there was a sudden flurry of activity. Departments reported in as ready and crew members were sent to various points about the ship to assist the docking process. James watched the frantic work with a practiced eye.
As the Atlantis closed on the moor point James turned to his second in command, "XO you have the bridge." "Aye, I have command"
One of the joys of being a liner Captain was thanking the departing guests and welcoming the boarding ones. That being said Baden Baden was the shortest turn around of any of his ports of call. The Atlantis would be docked for a mere 2 hours, and in that time she had to be refueled, resupplied, and cleaned. Unfortunately the short turn around time meant the Captain hardly had time to turn from thanking departing guests to welcoming the VIP's that boarded first.
It was exactly 2 hours and 10 minutes later when James reentered the bridge. He knew it was 10 minutes because less than 10 seconds after his two hours were up Baden control had pinged his personal communicator demanding an explanation. Every minute after that first transmission another came in with the same demand.
"I have command, status report?" James grabbed a tablet and walked up to the navigation array as each department checked in. The A.I.'s voice filled the bridge. "We are 10 minutes and 45 seconds behind..." James roared as he cut the A.I. off "Belay that! Jane was right to suggest we eject you off the ship..." James paused for a moment as his tablet updated with the last departments ready status. He continued talking with a more normal tone of voice, "Helm make ready to depart, seal all external airlocks and lets make some noise."
The mooring cables were released and the Atlantis quickly pulled away from the planet

James was in his ready room, working on paperwork before his watch started. Traveling between four houses, two of whom were at war lead to a lot of paperwork. As the last manifest declaration was completed James ordered an espresso. An attendant quickly appeared with a hot cup.
James took the cup and thanked the attendant. He walked to his viewing window and watched as Nuremberg grew in size. They would be landing planet-side soon. Nuremberg was one of a handful of planets that OSC had paid to have a spaceport expansion added to the Resort. This enabled even a Liner the size of the Atlantis to comfortably moor. OSC's anti-gravity suspension system also prevented any dents or scratches from occurring, in fact the system was so powerful the Atlantis itself would practically coast into moor point.
James was also excited for a full cleaning, because of the spaceport the Atlantis would have an extensive ground support crew who would assist his regular crew in the resupply process. The external hull would get a detailing job as well. The ground crew would also be detailing all of the ships internal surfaces. Sure the ship was less than a month old, but he had appearances to keep up.
His door rang, "Enter". Adam, the ships XO came in holding a tablet. "Captain, we've finished our daily briefing, engineering has requested to spin down the two secondary reactors now. They found a minor leak in the secondary coolant loop and they would like it cooled down before we land for a quicker turn around."
James took the tablet and started to read the repair list. "Any reason for the leak?" Adam shrugged, "Space is hostile, at least we have three reactors, imagine if we were on the Olympic." James chuckled, "No doubt, let engineering know to proceed."
They both left the ready room and approached the navigation table, "I have the bridge." James called out. "All departments check in, make ready to de-orbit." The bridge started the landing procedure, taking a liner down to the surface of a world wasn't that unusual, but it certainly was an impressive sight.

The doors opened as they entered the engine room. The ceiling was 3 stories high, making this the second largest compartment in the ship. Catwalks and platforms ringed the hexagonal chamber.
“Here’s the new reactor, sir,” Engineer Hikowa said.
The main reactor ring was nestled in the center of what appeared to be two smaller reactor rings. Technicians floated nearby taking readings and monitoring the output displays on the walls.
“I’m not familiar with this design.”
“It’s the latest reactor technology. The Atlantis is the first ship to get it. The two smaller fusion reactors come online to supercharge the main reactor. Their overlapping magnetic fields can temporarily boost power by three hundred percent.”
James whistled appreciatively as he scrutinized the room. “I don’t see any coolant pipes.”
“There are none, sir. This reactor uses a laser-induced optically controlled ion slurry in order to chill the reactor to near-absolute zero which neutralizes the waste heat. As a result the more we crank up the power, the more juice we have to cool the system. It is very efficient.”
The smaller reactors flickered to life and James felt the ambient heat in the room jump, then suddenly cool again.
James glanced around the room, "I'd like to lunch soon, how long until the shake down is complete?"
"The shakedown is currently in its Omega cycle, I expect to be ready to make way in less than an hour."
James made his way back to the bridge. His next cruise would be a sightseeing venture, all the way to New London then on-wards to the Luxury Liner Mackinac. As he entered the bridge his XO Adam quickly approached him with a spring in his step. "You look quite chipper Adam, care to explain why?" "You remember that escort we had a few weeks back? Went by the name of Peter Grobel. He is available again and we will be linking up with him near Kensington." "Very good"
James clapped Adam on the back and walked with him to the navigation station. The trip was going to be a long one.
It was several hours, and several systems later when James ended his watch and entered his ready room. "No rest for the wicked." he muttered under his breath. They were less than 4 hours from the Mackinac and already he had verification forums to fill out for a cruise that was still a few weeks away. It wasn't the heavy drinking that was going to kill him. It was the red tape. His communicator pinged him. He noticed it was the Captain of the escort vessel, Peter. After talking for a bit they got to the gist of the problem, gunboats aren't particularly focused on crew comfort. James thanked the other captain for the escort and even used his seniority to get a few rooms on the Mackinac. James ended the call and went back to the paperwork, it certainly was going to be a long day.
