In actuality though, it can get into Jumpgates easily enough. If you notice, you can come at a Jumpgate from a very strange angle and you are simply 'sucked' in. So it can work.
I would advise giving it a faster cruise speed however, with a longer charge time to compensate. To negate the universal cruise speed, simply use a different engine, has been done.
Can we not do that for Capital ships, and all the ship classes? Make a new engine for each ship class?
Give each class a different engine then the cruise rule idea, is hardcoded into the ships. Then we could get rid of that rule, and allow people to cruise in and out of fights.
Give a capital a medium cruise. A fighter a faster cruise. Freighters medium-fast. Tranports slow-medium. Bombers medium.
If anyone in a fighter complains about the capital ship catching them you can say, "Your flying skills is teh lose. pay me 10 Mill and Ill train you," because then fighters would have no excuse, since it would be hardcoded for the fighters to be faster. And cruisers could actually try to catch the fighters. And fighters could 'Kite' Capitals... if they haven't learned to ignore the fighter...
Have I missed a strategic thing?

IF - such a thing was done - it would only affect newly purchased ships. - the old ones would either stay the same, or be somewhat corrupted - or a playerwipe would be needed to get rid of the old ones - since the current engine is an item - and changing that item would mean that players with current ships cannot unmount / remount that item, cause its not in the list to be mounted / unmounted playerside.

If such a thing were done, wouldn't it affect all ships regardless of things bought? no engine is bought, they aren't items as far as I'm aware.
If your talking thrusters, then no, I'm not talking about them.
I'm talking about CRUISE engines that come on the ships.
Edit: After re-reading i think your saying the cruise engines ARE an item, but no player can change them correct?
Perhaps if this is implemented we could have voluntary ship replacement with faction or admin funding?
It would take a shed load of work and time, which most don't have, since education/work cuts into it.
I wouldn't mind the change, I don't fly large craft, yet. But I think its more trouble than its worth. And by engines being items, I think its something to do with the .ini coding. Just a guess though, I think even hardpoints are items. Again just a guess.
Actually modifying the file is rather simple.
Find replace will locate the text needed and then just change the values.
Jinx, since the "engine" is an interegal part of the ship, no player wipe is needed.
The modified code would be loaded the second the person logs in.
Changing code is only an issue if it is in relation the mountable items, not base items.
Here's something else to consider ... smaller ships cannot carry as much fuel and have a shorter range than larger ships. While smaller ships are more maneuverable and faster than capships ... they cannot travel as far. Unfortunately you can't change this due to game mechanics ... but ... how about limiting cruise capabilities on smaller ships?
Thats kind of a different issue Baltar.
Although it is linked, Im not looking to run ships off fuel, but rather
trying to eliminate a rule that is causing much controversy, while
at the same time reducing the flying and combat tactics available.
If fighters had no cruise engine, then that would tip the balance to
capitals...although more realistic i dont like it. (fighter jockey:D)
Fact is, many people (unless they are in a faction and even then...) dont fly together.
Unless its well organised beforehand, different ship classes dont fly together.
Having different cruise speeds for ship classes would solve many problems,
as we could eliminate the rule, introduce more tactics, AND hardcode the
intent of the rule, without having the rule lawyering that we do currently.

Engines have to be an item. I reinstalled disco wrong once and lauched. I found I had no ship model, no guns, and no engines among other things. All I could do was float outside the base and look around. Very disconcerting at time.

Thoughts ... ideas?
I'm thinking about this...I think it could be done with a server mod. Almost certainly could support requiring some amount of fuel to use a jumphole/gate.
- Fighters can't carry much and use lots
- Capships & Liners can carry more and but use lots and lots
- Freighters can't carry much but use much less
- Transports somewhere in the middle.
Don't know if we'll ever put it into the server but when I get a chance I'll write some code and see if it works.
Also could possibly disable cruise if you have no fuel...and variations on this theme.
With this I can imagine interesting situations like being a universal pilot asking Corsairs for fuel in O41. :)
or having to PM for help and fuel while stuck in unknown. Only 100000000 credits for 10 units of H3.
I wouldn't make fuel available in lots of systems...leave it as is and let ships sell it to players in systems there is none available.
This would/might force people to fly together...with a transport for fuel supplies. An invading fleet could get stuck in a system if the defenders destroy the fuel tanker.
