and - what for? .. you are aware that its not a first person shooter where you can place a neat headshot. - one cannot even kill a starflier in one shot. - and it would take the game from a semi simulation too much to a first person shooter - imo. ( i know its pretty much an arcade shooter anyway - but still )
such a ship - with a good gunner would not need to have any piloting skills anymore, but just sit there and fire 2 well placed shots on someone ( provided the shot is - like sharpshooter shots are so often - instantanous )
if its not instant ( or lightning fast ) - its useless at that range. - i think the idea is mostly not practical.
edit: gosh, after re-reading what i wrote, it sounds very negative. - well, i m not fond of how it might work - but that doesn t mean the idea is bad as such. i just don t think it can be balanced or fits to freelancer ( a game that upsets physics by making laser and other particle weapons as fast as sonic )
the idea of "long range fire support" is what is attempted to be applied to destroyer / cruiser roles in the next version. - not like the classic sniper - but much more like a long range support from the second line.
I like the idea of a ship acting as a missle platform providing LRM support. At least that seems more practical than a sniper cannon. The damage it dishes would have to be low-mid.
i think it would only work against slow capital ship... or the projetile speed must be near 10000...
it sounds good...but i must be a civilan ship, cause all/most fractions should be albe to take it... if only one fraction is allowed to use it, it will be fast and super imba ship...
if this ship will be designed i think it should use guns like this:
the "sniper"
2 - 4 class 5 weaps
a class 6 / 7 shield
and a CM dropper
i think it would be a good design idea if the main part of the ship be a barrel with a side cockpit
and it should be less maneuverable

a catamaran will be a alternative too...
so the sniper can shot 2 strong shots with a delay of 5 seconds or so...but the weapons need to reload like 60 seconds...

i think some wings (for stabilization) should be mounted
the cockpit should be higher than the barrel cause the pilot must show to the right side for incoming enemys or so
the engines should be very big (a pair of medium sized or one giant) cause they must drive a big mass
one smaller engine can be mounted on the barrel below the cockpit
the cockpit itself should be big too... cause the gun need very much energy, so a big energysource is needed
some directional antennas should dont look so bad
for the colors i would advise a dark hull with green lights...it think it look great
There were snipers in a server in which i used to play in, but those were fighter guns, class 9-10. I think they had like 3k range and around the same projectile speed. But if its gonna be a sniper SHIP , then im a bit clueless. Maybe it could have like a front cannon which deals the same dmg a a usuall one , but has alot more range , and uses more energy...
