So for this new update, is there an auto update installer or must we do a new start from scratch installation?

Download the installer from this thread here
http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=125252
and follow the instructions, then launch DSLauncher.exe which you will find in your Discovery Freelancer 4.88.0 directory.
You don't need to uninstall 4.87 and you don't need to reinstall freelancer.
