I have small preposal about 1 thing. All we know about branders i hope (ships carrying explosives that capable to blow other ships). In original freelancer we've seen brander in Alaska when cpt. Walker brandered 2 liberty dreadnoughts and made way to Junko.
So my preposal is to add branders to server. I saw nuclear devises in Frankfurt and noone even using it. I heared that it used for base in 1 factory construction or something else, then why not use it for brander?
Works 2 ways:
Way 1: You can "activate" nuckear devises typing some command and drop it to space. Someone pick it up and you blow him.
Way 2: You carrying them and "activate", going to enemy and blowing yourself up with enemy.
The only problem is shield, so maby make that explosion not effect on shield, but effect on hull, like radiation (but very strong one because it's nuckear devices).

it could work if it was a neutron-bomb - the neutrons released would create a temporary but intense area of radiation (actually true science).
the neutron bombs could require a neutron bomb module, and a ship with a large enough powercore to fire it (think expensive cattlebruiser) and enough mass to create the radiation (think cap 8 au). drive ship up to target, drop shields and press the big red button.
this would create
a) a credit sink - need to trade to buy the materials for the modules, the bomb, the ship and the armour
b) a way for smaller factions who are cash rich but have few members to take on a big war machine (think 80 years war)
c) a way of stripping out bases from inconvenient corners of claimed space without having to have every single mothers' son and his dog firing on it and making the server fall over.

Edit: oh, and due to the tactic being used by Sir Francis Drake in the 1500's, we call them fire-ships
I remember freeworlds having changed the missile models of capital ships to fighters. So you could puff out suicidal X-wings, it was actually quite funny to watch.
As for 'branders' on actual player ships? We totally need more suicidal ships, since we don't have enough.
If dying actually gave a penalty, then it might work out.
How about making brander ship as really suicide ship? I mean if ship activate brander (if he have needed commodity onboard) that destruct ship fully. And his char wil be fully destroyed, deleted, or become a shuttle.
