I came across this information today, which doesn't really seem to cover up with realities of Planet Kitadake in New Tokyo.
According to this but seeing that, I believe someone (not sure if Disco or Digital Anvil devs) overlooked the fact that Kitadake should have rings.
What do you think about it? I think the ring that we always had in Shikoku seems to be the ring that should be around Kita, but that's just my proposition for answering a question "where the hell did rings go"?
I doubt that. 'Ring system' generally refers to exactly what Tori means. Probably indeed overlooked by DA, I mean FLs release was pretty rushed once Microsoft took over the stuff.
The rings in Shikoku were actually suppose to be around a proto planet in the vanilla version of the game, it's been a while since I even played Freelancer, so I couldn't tell you whether or not said proto planet was even there anymore or even in the Disco mod.
I do remember it being a solid invisible object that you could bounce off of and it'd allow you to select it but other than that, it really had no use or point.
Are you sure the rings didn't just disappear temporarily? I experienced such with Tonnerre in Burgundy a few times in the past, it has rings around it, but sometimes they disappear, then later they are visible again.

Found an old Lancers Reactor link about someone asking on how to change the info card or add rings to certain planets. Kitadake and Fuji are the two brought up, and this was back in 2005. So... it looks like the planets were meant to have rings, but never got around to getting any.
