Jason exited the elevator at around 1200 hours. The meeting was about to commence so he started heading done the hallway to reach it. "Director on bridge!" yelled someone from the background and a path was cleared for Jason to pass. Jason nodded in sign of appreciation and moved to enter the Waroom in the Command Center. As soon as he entered all the humming and side talks stopped and the group's attention directed at him "I brought you this..." said Jason as he tossed the datapad he had with him on the table, in front of the group. "I'd say we got stuff to talk. Let's start" added Jason as he sit down at one of the seats surrounding the table.
Isaac was immersed in thought about the petite blonde bartender in the pub somewhere beneath this deck. He was completely mesmerized by hers energy while she was mixing all those drinks and how she served everyone in the bar by herself. Not to forget about those eyes ... those piercing eyes ... she needed just one look at him and she knew exactly what he was going to order long before Isaac knew himself....
"Director on bridge!"suddenly an awful extremely loud almost girlish scream came across the bridge that made his hair stand on end and he almost fell from his chair. He was almost recovered from the surprise and already there was Jason's datapad on the table right in front of him. Isaac looked around. It seemed that no one even noticed how awful the scream was. He shrugged his shoulders and picked up the datapad.
"Whats this ? "asked intrigued Isaac while studying the datapad."Seems to be quite big and more importantly very very wide."He looked at Jason"How is this ship going to even fit ? "Isaac gazed upon the datapad for a while "But this ship is indeed very interesting though. She has some tough armor and large cargo hold specialized to contain large amounts of ore. Probably we can refit them as assembly lines , but i can not say for sure without more thorough inspection."He returned the datapad on the table "Also i think that if we tweak those hands a bit , with such a vessel perhaps we will be able to reshape and add additional outer layers. Definitely wont be easy, but it could work"
Isaac looked questioningly at Jason"Director, i am a bit confused . Are we not jumping ahead of ourselves ? I thought that we were gathered here to discus how are we going to do the initial scans.... Am i missing something ? "
"Indeed, that needs figuring out also." said Jason. He leaned back in his seat and looked around at everyone else in the room to make sure everone's attention is directed at him, then continued "We also need an approximate cost of this whole deal, getting a green light from Overwatch, finding out the technical characteristics of those two minefields, deciding on this ship or another then acquiring, modifying it and only then bringing the elbow-grease to fix those minefields.
Tantalus sits idly looking and the datapad, occasionally glancing to the conversation above, he then puts his head up Hmm, I used to see these ships all the time flying around the Tau's gents. Now i'm not an expert on these things. But the least I know is that these are used commonly for mining. Tantalus looks back down to the datapad and speaks without looking up Now the good question is Axis, how in hell are we going to nab a ship of that size from an installation? His slight Bretonian Dublin accent surfaces I suppose you could ask one of our allies... Possibly the Bundschuh? Blah... He grumbles under his breath Perhaps I should've drank a bit before I came to this meeting... Tantalus ducks his head back down to the datapad as the conversation continues
Isaac reached into his inner pocket for the small military canteen full with sake. He took a sip from it and tossed it to Tantalus. The young engineer looked towards Jason" Are we searching for a cheap approach or this issue should be done properly no matter the cost ? ". He made a pause, while enjoying the taste that remained after the sake."After our initial talk in the bar i have been doing some thinking about how to do the scan. Perhaps if we can, for a while, get our hands on four of those fancy reconnaissance cruisers and their enhanced scanning capabilities, i reckon we can do the initial mapping quite fast and detailed. We just need to position one of the cruisers in the center and the other three in orbit of the minefield, supported by a dozens of very small crafts , light fighters or something even smaller and there should not be any problems doing a complete detailed mapping."Isaac looked eagerly towards Tantalus who seemed to be enjoying Isaac's sake quite a bit and there were no signs that he was going to return the canteen any time soon.
"I see no reason to employ that much resources. As we can get a head-start with the scanning and follow with fixing the areas scanned. This way we reduce both on costs and effective time." Jason pulled himself from the table and started walking around. He was one of those motric thinkers, having the best ideas while wandering about with the problem in mind. "No need to make use of a recon cruiser; moreover, those long range scanners are not suited for this job. We need to focus on a small range equipment but with good range resolution. Accuracy is the key word here. Speed is not an issue either. The fileds stood in place for years now, they won't go away in a few more months." Jason remained silent for a few steps tapping his bottom lips with the index finger. He then continued. Those scanners the xenoarcheologists use...we nee something like that...
Isaac looked intrigued at Jason " Do you mean those continuous wave radars they use to map their archaeological sites ? But how are we going to measure distance with them ? "He threw another desperate glance towards his canteen in Tantalus' hands.
Jason continued to walk around the table. People attending were gettign anxious by the look of things. He saw the need to conclude everything so that they can pass to more important matters on the daily agenda. "Yes, I was thinking of that: using a scanner that would sacrifice range for range resolution, the higher the accuracy the better. I consider a Continuous Wave scanner would make for a good solid base for a survey tool. If we couple the CW scanner with a precisely timed automatic Frequency Modulation we'll introduce artificial time references in the survey." He went quiet for a minute there and looked around at everyone present . "Using that time reference will solve the range indication problem. Moreover, given the minefield's relative thickness, I can say the tool will not be needing a great amount of power - somewhere in the hundreds of mW. Jason found himself in front of his seat as he finished talking. He leaned against the headrest and continued "Now, gents, this meeting is over. For now, we've touched everything we could. All members involved in this project will be informed of the date and place for the next meeting. By that time we should have Overwatcher's answer and we can talk more of the specifics of this operation.
Jason was expecting everyone to join the meeting. He announced those present 10 days ago in the Military Comand Center that today should be the day all details will be settled. Overwatch sent a reply with all the data necessary, a possible ship was already discussed and during this time, something Jason suspected came to fruition and he managed to get Canaan aboard for an upgrade on the Cell's rudimentary surveying vessel, the "Oberth.ROP-CU", with no questions asked. "Let me see if I have everything here!" Said Jason while browsing the datapad connected to the holographic projector in the middle of the room. "The ship analysis report, the minefield data from the Overwatch and the logs confirming Canaan's help. OK, all is here. He then proceeded to his desk and started sipping from the hot cup of tea he had prepared earlier.
Isaac was late. As always when he was in a hurry the stupid elevator got stuck. Swearing like a sailor he took the diagnostic tool out of his tool box and started searching for the maintenance interface. In ten minutes, few panels and small force field he managed to access the elevator's interface.
After extensive system check it turned out that every system is in perfect shape, just the maintenance was overdue and the fail safe had kicked in because of that. He made few nice comments about certain people relatives and overrode the safeties. The elevator started moving again . In his hurry he almost forgot to turn back the safeties to their default state before he leaves.
It seems that quite a lot of people got worried by his running towards the directorate office. Their faces almost made him laugh.
Isaac barged in like it was his own office. Strangely Jason did not even notice him. He was concentrated on his ..... tea !? What about the meeting ? Did Isaac missed it ? Is the meeting even today !? Perhaps he had spent more time in the elevator than he thought....
